I went and looked at the ad - not sure I'd call it a 'scam' in the current internet sense; he is, after all, looking to sell this face to face. In the info box it does say '58 and it does say R-model BMW, and those are romanticized inferences, (what some might call lies) rather than true, in the legal and moral sense. On the other hand, when he says an original, my impression is that he means it is unique, rather than a true unmolested original German factory production. So, given the vagaries and variances in intent and communication, I would write it off as ill-advised fanciful, hyperbolic salesman's bunk. As long as he didn't repeat the fantasy to the perspective new owner, I'd let a lying dog sleep as well. (or am I saying that wrong?)
The woman at the drugstore wanted to sell me a $20 12 month extended warranty on a $15 kettle... and hardly noticed when I laughed. Kind of met a different definition of a scam, to my mind, but she was just doing her job - just not much of a job, I guess.
