Caught a scammer
« on: September 02, 2012, 03:31:22 AM »
I saw this four hours fresh

http://bc.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-street-cruisers-choppers-1958-BMW-R-Series-W0QQAdIdZ409891483

I emailed the guy and told him to come clean or I would rat him out.

On reflection, I don't know how to rat out someone on Kijiji.

If the bozo thinks he can pull a fast one because of i.d. tags and such, he ought to know he his not the only person who surfs Ebay.  Yes, you can buy a Chang Jiang, and replace the riveted on serial and model number plate with BMW copies readily available from my favorite Chang parts supplier.  It was the close up pic of the speedo that blew it.  Just like my Chang Jiang... right down to the cheapo plastic key.

I just did the click and report thing.   I also checked and its still on Kijiji.  This burns my arse.  The bike is decent enough that he could just say what is actually is.  As if someone who wants an old BMW would fall for this blatant fraudster.

Here are some BMW makeover parts on Ebay

I've reported scammers before. On Kijiji,Ebay and Craigs list, usually nothing happens. That isn't to say that they do nothing all of the time. Just the other day I had an item pulled by Kijiji because it had RCMP in the header.Guess it violated one of their policies. So either someone reported it or they have some kind of program that scans for "bad" wording.

The ad is still up.  He did not respond to my email (surprise).

This is such a blatant fraud.  I am tempted phone the guy.  Either that or the cops although I don't think they'd do much either.  The last couple of times I had stuff stolen, no one even came by for further details.  It was like, "yeah thanks for the call."

I wonder if Bofud or any other forum members in that area know of this bike and owner?

Yes ,Dennis i do know him. I think any serious buyer would know the difference . He has had that thing on sale for a long time . It is not running right and anyone partin with that kind of dough ,well , i think and hope would check it out. I have seen it around and it sounds sic. He has a couple of them and one with a sidecar and a phony machine gun thing on it. He did get stopped by the cops and checked out. They didn't like it at all, so i'm told. He's a tad bit wierd and i think ignoring him would be best. I think it will be a long time before anyone buys that . He also i'm told is selling the other ones as well. Sooooo if you wanna side car rig with a wanna be machine gun call me and i'll go and talk to him??

Thanks for the input Bofud.  I think you are right; just ignoring him is best.  I guess as a Chang Jiang owner, I love/hate my Chinese p.o.s. for what it is and would never attempt to mislead anyone about its true pedigree.

Right, like you would hack up a 1934 Beemer with only 1100 kms'. Actually doesn't look bad, though even in the pictures you can see the lack of quality workmanship. Stupid people have no money. Eventually registration has to come out-explain that one! He will push it around forever. CHEERS.

I went and looked at the ad - not sure I'd call it a 'scam' in the current internet sense;  he is, after all, looking to sell this face to face.  In the info box it does say '58 and it does say R-model BMW, and those are romanticized inferences, (what some might call lies) rather than true, in the legal and moral sense.  On the other hand, when he says an original, my impression is that he means it is unique, rather than a true unmolested original German factory production.  So, given the vagaries and variances in intent and communication, I would write it off as ill-advised fanciful, hyperbolic salesman's bunk.  As long as he didn't repeat the fantasy to the perspective new owner, I'd let a lying dog sleep as well.  (or am I saying that wrong?)
The woman at the drugstore wanted to sell me a $20 12 month extended warranty on a $15 kettle... and hardly noticed when I laughed.  Kind of met a different definition of a scam, to my mind, but she was just doing her job - just not much of a job, I guess.

Perhaps his idea of "original" is related to this guy's idea of "mint". Check out the pics.  http://princegeorge.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1960-Ford-F-100-Pickup-Truck-W0QQAdIdZ409405091   It would appear that mint must refer to the flavor of the gum being chewed.
As in all things "BUYER BEWARE".

Another thing about the ad for the Chang got me.  He is implying that it predates the Ruski's taking the Beemer factory.  When does he think the war in Europe ended? 1959?
