Interesting ride
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:34:00 PM »
After spending several hours riding around today, I was down by Northland Chrysler when my throttle cable broke.  I have broken clutch cables before, but never a throttle cable.  Rather than rely on BCAA, I cranked up the idle adjuster so the engine would rev with no load, and between clutching and using the kill switch, was able to get home.  It was actually pretty easy.  A quick kill to shift gears up, and just shut the engine off and coast when I wanted to slow down gradually.  The intersection of 5th Ave and Highway 97 was the most challenging.

The break is at the throttle.  Hopefully just the end broke off because I have some cable parts and should be able to solder on a new end piece.

Peace  Grease, Dennis

Same thing happened on the 76 wing this spring. I used a pair of vise grips to grab the cable and steered with the other hand. Fortunately didn't have far to get back home.

I used to have an 81 650 special that had to be dug out of a snowbank to bring home when purchased. Apparently snow is not good for cables. After about a month of riding it on my way to work (late) from some girl's house  went to twist the grip and..snap! Pulled the inner cable out of the outer, re-routed it and wrapped around the outside of the grip. Gave me about 3/4s throttle. Got me to work. On the way home 2 stops in poof. Goodbye clutch cable. Then missed the light. Managed to speed shift and found neutral. Allwynn's chopper will start in gear but anyone who has owned a 650 Yamaha will tell you the starter is crap. Good thing they came with kickers. So now standing beside the bike , wait for the light to change, run as fast as possible- did I mention it was really hot and I was very hungover-rev it up, clunk it in gear. had to do that three times but didn't have to push much. had spares at home so changed them both after dinner and went downtown. Hungover/late again. Cheers.

I am really glad I rewired the Suzuki.  It can be very helpful to be able to use the starter button with the bike in gear and the clutch out.  Idiot switches are for idiots.
