"interesting"?  I'd say terrifying.   Those guys go so fast past houses, roadside trees and stone fences that a crash must inevitably be deadly or severly life threatening.  I wonder if that poor guy in the dramatic crash clip lived.  Its pretty grim.

One more reason I like old bikes; they'll never go that fast.

Fascinating, for sure. I watched it several times. I have to agree with Dennis.

Just to let you know the lap record for the Isle of Man course is over 128 mph. A lap is a touch over 39 miles.  It was taken off the GP schedule many years ago because it was considered unsafe. Over 100,000 riders go over every year to the races. Over 120 riders have lost their lives. The course has been in use for over 100 years. I had the pleasure of riding the course when I was 18 years old ( a lot slower than those guys). Spent my honeymoon at the TT races. Garage helper for an Australian team in 1969. Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) lives on the IoM in a lighthouse.

Interesting information Terry.
However it must be a hair raising event with so many killed in action. Seriously, are there one to two riders killed every year or were most of the casualties before the bales of hay were put up.

You would have to have titanium balls to be competitive but I would love to twist that shit up with Zara once just to say I did. In my younger years I was an avid street racer. Anyone, any light, any time. Also spent a lot of years driving without a license. Believe it or not I've slowed down over time. Ah.. my misspent youth.

Unfortunately SHEP there are riders killed just about every year. 2011 I think 1 rider and a pair of sidecar racers.
Check this vid from 2010 Sidecar TT

It's never a good thing to have a fatality. If we CHOOSE to involve ourselves in a risky sport then we should do it with all of the information and equipment that will keep us reasonably safe. Here are a few stats that I found. I don't believe they tell the whole story by far, but they do give some food for thought.  This is for 3 months in the U.K.  Oh yes one site averaged about 60 deaths per year over the past 9 years from jumping out of perfectly good airplanes.  So be careful out there it IS dangerous.

2010 817 people died in perfectly good airplanes. I'll take my chances with the chute.

My quick online google says there are on average 30 Americans killed a year skydiving.  Another google suggested that there are about 8,000,000 person/flights per years.  If 817 die in a year, that is a bit more than 1 in 1,000,000 chances of dieing in the US in a plane crash.

The actual question was put to Jeeves "The big question is always, "How dangerous is skydiving?" Each year, about 30 people die in parachuting accidents in the United States, or roughly one person per 100,000 jumps. Look at the US Skydiving Incident Reports to get an idea of the types of problems that lead to fatalities. If you make one jump in a year, your chance of dying is 1 in 100,000.

"How does the fatality rate in skydiving compare to other common activities? Since most adults in America drive cars, let's compare skydiving to driving. Roughly 40,000 people die each year in traffic accidents in the United States [ref]. That's 1.7 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles. Therefore, if you drive 10,000 miles per year, your chance of dying in a car wreck in any given year is something like 1 in 6,000. In other words, we accept a higher level of risk by getting into our cars every day than people do by occasionally skydiving. You would have to jump 17 times per year for your risk of dying in a skydiving accident to equal your risk of dying in a car accident if you drive 10,000 miles per year."

Great, and I drive a lot more than 10,000 miles, and a quater of that is on ice and snow."  I think I should take up skydiving.  I hate to think what the odds are of getting killed driving fast at night on drugs while trying to not spill my drink while lighting a smoke and listening to AC/DC.

I have done all of those things except the cell phone on more occasions than I'd  like to admit ( with one eye closed)-- wonder if that improves my odds or destroys them? Oh yeah, it was usually Aerosmith, not AC/DC- though I like them both. Carried me through a lot of drunks. Some with Stu.
