gas tank petcock mod??
« on: July 30, 2014, 11:00:29 AM »
hey all,

im fitting a smaller tank on my bike, bike is a 79 gs850, the new tank is from a gs550, i have the tank lined up in an ok spot but the bloody petcock is right above the carbs.

my question is if anyone in pg can move the petcock for me? i think it should really be upgraded to a new one at the same time, as the original vac actuated one is bulky and leaky.

let me know what you guys think.

thanks,
phil.

She's looking good.   I don't have any ideas,  I haven't had much experience with those vacuum monsters

I like your choice of tank also.  Have you fabricated the mounts?  Are you trying to keep the paint as is on the tank or will it/can it be repainted?  I ask because replacing the petcock and moving it is not a big fabrication job, but will mean some sheet metal welding.  After fabrication on a gas tank, it is going to need to be painted and probably lined.

There are lots of weld in "bungs" for aftermarket petcocks. Basically weld up the existing hole, cut in a new one, weld in the bung, and screw in your new petcock.

Here is a link to Low Brow Customs online store with petcocks and bungs.  I have dealt with Low Brow quite a few times.  They're great to deal with.

If you don't have a welder capable of welding sheet metal, we can steer you to the right places/people.

Thanks guys. I have the mounts figured & the tank will get new paint this winter, so I'm not worried about welding. I have a decent flux core wire feed, do you figure that will work? I've never messed with tanks before.

I wouldn't use flux core.  No tank for your welder?  You can weld fairly thin steel with a MIG, but I'm skeptical about flux core.

The link I sent about Low Brow was just an example.  There are quite a few other outfits selling bungs.  Goodle "Bung King."  I've bought his stuff too.
