Mechanic search
« on: April 25, 2014, 06:33:08 AM »
A new P.G. resident is looking for someone to do some carb work on his bike. I met him in Kamloops a few years ago and he's on the bc classic site. Told him to check out this site and if he can to meet at the dub on Tuesday for ride night to get to know some of the guys, his name is Ian.

As far as I know, there is only one business holding itself out as doing general motorcycle repairs; Marks Marine.  Fast One has expressed an opinion on that business.  I won't as I have no direct first hand experience.

Many of us are approached by people looking for a "shade tree" mechanic.  It happens to me just about every weekend that my garage doors are open.  Someone comes by who has seen I have motorcycles up on stands and asks if I would be willing do such and such on their bikes.  I always politely turn them down.  Most have had bad experiences with dealerships who are not interested in working on older machinery.

Fast One who has the most experience in the business has described how hard it is to make a buck at it.  That's probably why there are not more small engine/motorcycle shops around.

What this Club and forum can offer is lots advice if he wants to do it himself.  We're great at that.

Peace & Grease, Dennis

It's the advice and interaction with people that help me the most in working through bike related issues. I really wish I lived closer to a group of like minded people, there are a few very nice vintage bikes in the  Bulkley Valley it's just hard to connect with them. As for the guy needing carb work, if he is not willing to pay what it is worth then tell him to learn to do it himself. We need to be honest and open with each other, limits conflict and problems. I hope he can hook up and share with what this group of people have to offer, miss you guys and hope to see some of you at O-Keefes.

Advice is always free from from me. My time, however is valuable and limited. If your friend is short of ability or interest in doing his own work then I would suggest Kim at K.K. motors. He has a good rep and has been in business for a long time. Not free but reasonable. You didn't specify year/make/model? Cheers.

Sometimes a person tends to over mystify carbs.  If a person has some mechanical ability he should be able to take a carb apart and do a good cleaning on it.  Of course some basic tools are needed.  I actually have time to spare at the moment and if he wants to bring his carb over to me I can at least have a look at it with him if he likes.  If you like give me his name and phone number.  Mine is 250-562-4174.  I do have call display and I generally do not answer numbers that give me no clue as to who is calling.  Our answering machine takes those calls.....I also should mention I am not a mechanic, but have pulled many carbs apart, cleaned, etc.
