Need to rent/borrow a bike trailer
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:22:00 AM »
I need to rent or borrow a small motorcycle trailer to pick up the XLCH in Kelowna. I'll take care of insurance and reasonable rent if you have one available. Please let me know the ball size too.  I'm planning to head down there on April 6th.

Please contact me on email -  stevecrout@hotmail.com

Thanks!

Steve

I have an excellent (although a bit ugly) motorcycle trailer with full size wheels/tires.  I hauls beautifully.  Its insured. 2" ball.  Everything works (at least last time I used it).   Its not enclosed.  I has a nice steel channel for keeping your wheels where you want them.

You are welcome to it.

Peace & Grease, Dennis

I don't have a trailer to offer but I do have a bar harness that you can borrow for your trip. Kurt used one when he picked up a bike for me in that was in Fruitvale last year.
After seeing it being used on my bike I bought one for my future use and to share with club members.

Terry Miller rents a slick covered trailer every spring to get his bikes serviced in Kelowna - it has a tall fibreglass shell, and tows behind Terry's Ranger without difficulty, so it is pretty light.  It's maybe a bit wider than my trailer, so it is maybe just around 6 ft wide?  He rents it either at that place behind the old Canadian Tire location, or on 1st Avenue, I can't recall.  I'll ask Terry.  Considering the unpredictability of the weather, if you can't get the bike into the back of a truck (which is usually good enough for anything short of winter conditions), I think the covered trailer is a good way to minimize risk/work and maximize reward.  I own an open trailer (which you can use), and I have used an open trailer for long trips, and IMHO an open trailer is less than ideal unless the conditions are good.  I hate it when the bike ends up damaged/dirtier than if you had ridden it...

I thought you were buying  a truck?

Thanks Russell - I am looking for a truck but I thought if I was going to indulge myself I might as well do it right so I'm holding out for a long box, crew cab, Dodge Ram between 2000 and 2004 with the 5.9 Cummins diesel.

It'll take me a while to convince/justify the cost/calm down my wife once I take the plunge so I might as well make it worth the effort!  ;) ;)

Terry says he rents the trailer from Danchuk Trailers in the BCR;  he confirms it is about 6x6, fibreglass-shelled, and easy towing, though he says it bounces a bit when empty.  Terry has pulled that unit for a few thousand miles now, at least, so the fact he goes back to it pretty often is a testament to it's suitability for the task;  he is able to satisfactorily tie down not only his 650+ lb BMW touring bike, but alternatively also his 999 Ducati, which, with it's low and narrow bars and full fairing, would challenge many trailer's tie down routines.  You'll be ducking, of course, where Terry and I can move without thought...

The one thing the trailer does not have that I like is a window at the front (or at the back, I don't think);  I do find it a comfort to be able to tell everything is straight and immobile at a glance - another small point in favour of getting it into the back of the truck.  You'll likely remember from crating your Flathead,  I perhaps overly-incline towards granny-panties deliberation in areas like this...

My thanks to all in the club who responded with offers and information.   I have a trailer sorted out now thanks to Dennis.

Since I am heading down to Kelowna on April 7 or 8th and back in a few days - does anyone have stuff to drop off or pick up?  Any chroming going to the Kelowna shop?  If so, let me know by email  stevecrout@hotmail.com

Thanks

Steve
