Storage Options

Hey all,

Wondering if any of you know of storage options for the winter. I had asked another member of the club if he offered storage for the winter  (for a price of course) and what he charged. Turns out he doesnt offer that type of service.

So, im looking for a place to store both my bikes for the winter.

Not sure if dealers do this or not, I will call and find out.. but nonetheless, my babies need a place to hibernate for the winter.

What do you all do with your bikes?

I have some in the shop, some in the garage, some in the sheds, some in a Grumman van and some in buried culverts.

How big are they? I have a storage locker at Budget where I keep my 5 bikes. Its 10 by 20. It should fit a couple more. If they are long wheel based it my be tough getting them around one corner. It wont be free but it wont be to much

I most likely will have my bike in my basement this winter for repair.  Thus I will have room for one bike in my garage this winter.  It is unheated most of the time, I may heat it if I need to do a car repair but mostly will be cold in there.  For club members this will be cheap.  Mike  562-4174

I have this problem also.  I have to crawl over the bikes currently in my garage.  I want to have only the bikes I plan to work on this winter in my garage.  Fortunately, I have some space at my downtown office that I can access through the back door of my building.  In the past I have stored 4 bikes here, but this winter I plan to pack them in like sardines so I can focus on the projects.

I have to drain all gasoline out of my bikes when I store them in my building (fire insurance). 

The big bummer for me right now is that "projects" include my XL250 which I want to get at least running decently before I put it away, the Ebay bobber which has some new carb jets on the way and I want to install, test and tune them before it goes away, and my flat tracker which I wanted to change the tank (I guess that can wait).

The Chang Jiang will probably spend the winter outside under a cover, unless I can persuade the in-laws to store it in their barn.

I guess a question to be asked is if there are several members who would like to go in on a consortium to rent a storage locker for the winter months.  I wouldn't mind storing 2 or 3 bikes out of my garage for the winter.  Not sure what the rates are for a bay, but I could make a couple calls to find out.

Hans, Im thinking there is a consensus here to do that .. between a few of us, im sure it would be a fairly cheap option for us all.

to all interested members. I own a 28' dry van that is currently empty. it has a roll up door issue that could be fixed easily. I do not have time to fix the problem, and i will be home around the 20th October. yes, this year...lol. it can be secured and i have had no troubles with this area... the down side is little accessability until snow goes, unless you like to shovel(a lot). its free and available, with a little sweat equity... let me know.

priced storage.  Currently Guy, Neil, Jeremy and myself are involved in this venture.  Have eyes on a 10x10 heated storage locker, but if we get a few more bikes/people to be involved, then a 10x20 will be looked at. 

I inquired at the old Wood Wheaton on 22nd and Victoria.  The guy did not seem overly keen.  He had some higher end car being stored there.  He didn't want things to be stored just anywhere, his idea was everything could be walked around.  I floated a price by him and his eyes glazed over.

Just for the heck of it I went into the W J Trailer site on first avenue and asked about storage. He has storage butdoes not have heated storage.
Here are his approximate prices without taxes.

Twenty Foot Unit:         Less than three months 180 per month, as low as 150 per month for six months
Forty Foot Unit:                   I believe he said it starts at 280 per month

He lives on site so there is some security.
He also claims that he has furniture and expensive cars in some boxes (all without heat) and with no detrimental effects to the stored items.

the 10x20 heated unit at Budget is $193/month, the 10x10 is about $135, prices all in.  My mental arithmetic says 7 bikes can fit in a 10x10 space.  So far in the consortium are Neil, Guy, Jeremy and myself with more than 7 bikes to be stored so we are looking at the larger space.  So if there is another person wanting to store a couple bikes, let me know.  I'll be making arrangements soon.

before you do anything make sure you can get the bikes into the locker you rent. The hallways are narrow and have tight turns. Mine only has one tight turn.Last year I think I had a 10 by 20 and it was VERY TIGHT with 5 bikes in it.
