Man I hate pg...I go look at a bike , tell the guy I'm probably going to buy it, just gimme 2 hours cause I need a friend to check it out before I buy. Call him tell him what time we will be there...he says okay not a problem. 30 mins later calls me and tells me its sold, he just sold it to a guy.

I'm hoping it wasn't anyone in this club lol cause that will be second time someone poached a bike under my nose.

Well having recently sold a bike ... I had a fellow come all the way from Terrace.  He told me the night before that he was coming and to "please please please don't sell it before [he] got [here]".  I hadn't had any other calls so I said fine, I'd wait for him until he arrived.  He was supposed to arrive at 2:00.  At around 1:00 I got a call from a guy for the same bike.  I told him he would have to call back in an hour because of the fellow driving in from Terrace.  The Terrace guy did not arrive until 3:00.  I have to admit that I was tempted to call back the local caller.   However, I did not and the Terrace fellow arrived with cash in hand.

When I go to buy, I am very careful not to lead any one on.  If I am not interested and not willing to make an offer, I just say thanks, that I will share my observations with Club members who may also be interested and leave.

Peace & Purchases, Dennis

A similar incident a while back caused a rift between certain club members, even though the bike went to it's intended owner. I have a rule when selling things. First one there with the money wins. The road to ruin is paved with good intentions. Can you tell I have been burned in the past? The seller had no obligation and was just looking out for his own best interests. Sorry you missed but if it was meant to be it would have happened. Who knows-maybe you dodged a Spectre! CHEERS.

yeah, cash talks and the rest walk is the general rule, but if you say you are going to give a guy a couple hours, people should stick to their word.

I totally get the cash talks .... but the point was that he said he would give me the two hours, in order to get someone else there. I told him I was most likely going to get it, and if not I wouldn't have told him that as Dennis eluded too is his "looking at bike"

I guess my real issue is he gave me his word, and then went back on it, in front of his daughter no less... something I do not appreciate at all.

I don't care if you want to sell your bike, but if you tell someone something, and agree to terms... honor those terms until the time expires.

Bikes, cars, or junk the response seems to be the same.  "I'll give you 50% less than you are asking and will take it tonight".  Then they never show or call again.  I  put my number in the ad and don't usually respond to e-mails. If they are actually interested they will call. As mentioned the first with money wins...a lesson learned by experience. Although I have held things for people as well. Have found that a good venue for selling is the Bargain Finder.  Good to support it if we can. Am in Vancouver at this time and found that the Buy and Sell is out of business. Too bad.

On "Thejij's" comment. I grew up reading western pocket books ( I know, I know) In them the good guy always kept his word. And today I feel the same way. if you give it you should keep it even if you wind up loosing in the end. The good guy always wins in the end.

All the guy had to say was "No, I can't hold it".  He would have sounded like a dickhead, but at least he'd be an honest dickhead.

 Yep!
I'm often found asking someone to wait on a sale while I get to the location where the bike is... and I always try to keep my word about when I would get there, or make other arrangements. I've traveled to Kamloops twice to pick up a bike. Once on just the sellers word he would hold the bike until I had a chance to see it. Another time I sent the seller partial payment and he held it for a couple months for me. I own both bikes now.
One of the posters in this thread is presently holding a bike for me - paid in full - sight un-seen. (You know who you are - THANKS!)
