Road Trip Needed
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:26:27 PM »
I bought a 1985-86 K100RS. It was being sold as a parts bike but I think it could go back on the road. It  has 20 k miles or Kms on it and has been sitting since 1990.
Unfortunately it is in Trail.
If I can't find someone headed down that way then I will drive down and get it myself.

Hey Shep, why is it being sold as a "parts bike"?  Are there registration issues?  While I have had great success in getting questionable motorcycles registered, some simply cannot be registered because the bikes have been written off in BC, or it was a write off in another jurisdiction and been exported for parts only.

I'd be happy to help with getting registration if the story is only that the current owner doesn't have papers, but it was/is still registered in BC.

Now for the "Rest of the story". Apparently it is a neglected and abandoned sibling from a separation. Sat in a living room for a long period of time, then turfed out to fend for itself as the male partner did not return to retrieve it. About to be sold for scrap metal price ($50) when a neighbor spots it and tells his motorcycle neighbor about it's impending date with the "Crusher".  The motorcycle enthusiast (an ex Kawi dealer) takes the orphan in. He knows that someone interested enough might be able to put the bike back into the mainstream of life or at worst allow many other bikes to improve their quality of life with the donor parts.
He has the last registered B.C. license plate (dated 1988) which I can have. However for some reason he wants an extra 200 dollars above the purchase price to sort the transfer papers? I don't know why. Also the bike was sold to me at an extremely fair price but it wasn't at $50. He says he has proof that the bike now belongs to him.
I may need your guidance in the future paper work once I have the bike in my possession.
thanks

Will he give you a bill of sale, or even just a receipt which shows that you paid $x for a 1985 BMW serial number whatever?

Unless the seller is also the current registered owner, I would save the $200 (provided that you at least get the above described bill of sale/receipt).  If the seller were the actual registered owner, it costs him $35 to get replacement registration and his time to do so.  Otherwise, he will just be doing what I am offering to assist you with.

Ya... it won't be difficult to get it papered. Do it yourself, or get Dennis to help out.

That story reminds me of the nice little Mercedes 250 SL I saw a few years ago with the personalized plate that read  "WAS HIS".

Why be normal?

Battery, side cover, seat cover tires, cables muffler and a thorough cleaning of the fuel system, engine flush and brake flush you should have a good bike. Early K models had teething pains with the fuel injection (remember, injection was still in it's infancy). While their were fixes don't know if that bike got them. Do the fuel system and engine flush then borrow the battery from your other bike and see how it runs before you commit a lot of time, money and effort. Could be a diamond in the rough! CHEERS.

Sometimes tey are diamonds in the rough and sometimes they are lemons.
