Cafe Racer

After watching the first 3 episodes of Cafe Racer on the Discovery channel to say I am disappointed would be an understatement.
To take a perfectly good Egli Vincent and "Americanize" it and then without even riding it sell it for $90,000. Disappointing
To take new 500cc Royal Enfield Bullet, Cafe Racer it (looked nice) then to expect it to do 100mph (it only managed 85mph). Disappointing
To take a 500cc Vincent and a 1000cc Vincent to Bonneville and find one doesn't even run(500) and the top speed for the other thru the traps was 109mph (heck the 1953 Lightning topped 130 mph out of the factory and held the record as the fastest production bike in the world till 1979). Disappointing.
The show starts with great shots and the music of the Ace Cafe in London but somehow doesn't reach the heights.
I have recorded them and will put them on DVD later.
ps What bike took the Vincent record in 1979?
pps I think Rusty's cafe Racers are equal if not better than any of those seen so far on "CAFE RACER"

Kind of cool up here to ride like the record maker/holder though.

I have been on a lot of cafe racer sites and must agree our club members build as good or better bikes than most grass roots builders. Do like the cafe racer show though, give it a chance at least we get to see some of these wonderful historic bikes. When did Discovery channel start showing it?? CHEERS.

Looks like 3 episodes. Shown on a Monday night. Search on your Shaw/Bell/ Telus guide for Cafe Racer.

Isn't the show on Discovery HD?  (which I don't get) I have season 1 and 2 on discs, or mostly, anyway;  but my discs come from a guy in Boston, and have the commercials - many, many commercials - in place, and that is tiresome, certainly at the pub, anyway.  I have never bothered to watch the show except at movie nights at Steamers, so I guess I must also think they lack a certain something... I find the magazine, which spawned the TV show, can be awkward and offputting.
It's a fine line though isn't it?  Modifying something, I mean.  It is nice to start with something that nobody (you think) would ever defend of feel proprietary about in it's stock form, or some poor wrecked basket case, and yet, no matter what you do, or what you do it to, there will be someone who shakes his head and says, 'ain't that a shame?'  The few real Harley guys who have looked at my Sportster - the having of which is already indicative of my suspect taste - have walked around it, shrugged, and said, 'well, different anyways.'  In spite of the fact that almost every bike gets some modification - even for strictly utilitarian purposes - people are as likely to be put off by as enthusiastic about changes.  Intrinsic to the highly tribal character of motorcycle guys, I think; our nature.  One guy's awesome ape-hangers are another guy's clubman bar parts...

I too stumbled upon " Cafe Racer" on discovery. It's not too bad a show, after all there is no other show in our jenre out there .  And Brummie, it was the  Kawasaki Z1 that bumped the Vincent, in 1973 . I'm not sure how long mamma Kaw held the record??
Anyways, I plan the contine to PVR "Cafe Racer" , as i find it to be quite informative for me , because i'm not a british bike guy... yet 8)

Right on Madmac. The Z1 came in as "AWESOME" and "totally unrideable" and ""too fast" and a whole bunch of other stuff which, when you cast your mind back and look at the comments from this distance in time, seem rather tame when we see what the modern superbike can do right off the factory floor.
Yes I will continue to watch "Cafe Racer" but I grew up in Birmingham and we had our own version of the "Ace Cafe" where true innovators of that period brought their Tribsa's, Triton's, Norvins, Rocket Goldies (pre BSA MODEL), and a bunch of other home made cafe's to eat meat pies, drink tea and see how fast you could actually get around the Bull Ring Circle. Them were the days.
