Sewing
« on: January 23, 2013, 09:22:48 PM »
Just had a new zipper put in the sleeve of my Joe Rocket leather and a front zipper in the coat I got from STU.  Had them done by my neighbor. Had to supply the zippers-about 4 bucks at p.g. sewing center. You have to measure the old ones!  Told her I needed them by spring and they were done in a week. 50 bucks out the door for both. Cheapest quote gotten from anyone else was 40 bucks each-flat rate, plus tax. Very good job. She is busy all the time- mark of a good seamstress. Did not get her name as she is foreign and a bit hard to understand but I would definitely recommend her 563-4626. CHEERS.

I took my tank bag to the shoe store on George.  $20 for a new good zipper.
I live with fear and danger everyday, but sometimes I leave her at home and go motorcycling.

I have one of my boots (and a new zipper) riding around in my truck waiting for me to happen by a shoe repair place - when did you go to thaf shoe repair place Hans?  My impression, when I looked for it, was that the repair shop I had in my mind for had moved or closed-up... also interested in a marine-grade Delryn zip (like the one that failed after about 25 years of stress), if anyone knows where those come from.  Really would like to avoid trying to sew it in myself.

that was last spring I did, the one right on the corner by the bakery.  Ask Neil about waterproof zippers.  He gets them for his drysuit repairs.

Steve and sons was the first place I went. Said he didn't do zippers and sent me to the expensive place. Maybe John's shoe repair on Brunswick. CHEERS.

Wow, that is weird... I went to Steve and Sons today with my boot and a zip I didn't really like, and he said he had the OE style zipper right there and that he'd change it out for $22 - I have a stub that says Feb 2, so I guess we'll see how it turns out then.  I walked along George feeling pretty good about all this so far - remembered I have a credit at The Final Chapter used book store,  looked in the bakery, remembered how much I like their crusty rolls, thought about going in to buy some, remembered that they never have any fresh ones that late in the afternoon, smiled at their NO CELL PHONES sign, and went whistling on my way...

Postscript:  and now it is February 10th, and the boot has been picked up - today, a week later than scheduled - but it has a zip that looks very much like the original YKK, seems well sewn-in, and cost exactly what he said it would.  I rate the transaction as highly satsfactory.  I also got that same vibe off George Street again, where the businesses are run by people and not corporations, and their individual personalities count for something.  Five stars - Joe Bob says check it out.

Nice to know where to get zipps fixed.  Gotta respect a business that has enough clients thru the door to not want people taking their so important phone calls and slowing things up in the process.
We had some international students over for Christmas dinner once and two of them just could not get off their stupid phones.  The next time I confiscated each phone at the door (the original culprits were not at the second event) and allowed one phone call to any friend who may think the owner of the phone died if they did not answer it.  Once dinner was over they were free to attach themselves to their pacifiers, haha.  The second group turned out to probably not need the phones confiscated so I have settled down a bit on that one....:)

So what the heck?? I went there because I had heard he did zippers, he was very friendly but said he just fixed boots! Is there some secret code or what? The fella that owns the bakery owns a black Triumph Rocket 3. Said it was the only bike he doesn't look stupid on-he's about 6'7. Used to bring me still warm sausage rolls when I worked on his bike...SSoooo good! CHEERS.

It would appear boots are one thing and clothing is another matter altogether.  Is Shannon still in town?

I would leap into the breetch and say, 'well, it was a zipper on a boot...' but he did do Hans' tankbag, and he said the reason he had the kind of zip my boot had was for repairing hockey bags and so forth... so that still leaves the question dangling;  WTF?  On the Pastry Chef baker (wasn't his name Hans, too?)  - yeah, I actually bought the GS1100ES (the one with the Hannigan on it) from him about a dozen years ago.  He was a good guy;  he was so convinced that he wasn't going to be riding anymore (no time) that he insisted I take his gear, too, giant gloves and boots and like that.  I think I gave the gear, which might have in retrospect fit Jeff, to the Sally Anne.  At that time he lived not too far from the Jij, just on the other side of Foothills.

Shannon is still around, just working out of his house. Good work but I can't afford him. Saw Mike Hyland today. Going to bring him Zara's seat for repair. He is not selling his business, just scaling back on the amount of work he does. His part time job turned into a full time job. 962-8318. CHEERS.

If you talk to Mike, ask him if it is easy(er?) to copy an existing seat cover than to make a new one from the ground up?  The seat cover on the black 850 Guzzi still looks ok, but it is getting pretty chewed along the bottom rails, where it was allowed to ride directly on the frame... I am thinking I won't be able to ride that bike too far with the foam it has in there currently - the seat might well need to come apart.

Mike likes to do custom seats and is very reasonable, usually no more than a "regular" covering. If you want keep the top and replace the foam he can do that to. CHEERS.
