Wolves - caught on camera @ 15'
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:38:11 PM »
I started using a trail camera (motion detecting camera trap) in November to pattern a whitetail buck. I noticed wolf tracks in the area and hoped to catch one on the camera. After several setups that produced some near misses, but no pictures, I vowed to do my best to get pictures of these elusive canines. Last evening I found a good set of 3 fresh wolf tracks on a trail and set up the camera. When I checked it this morning there were wolf tracks right over top of my boot tracks from the night before. These are the two best pictures from the lot. The first wolf is a young male who carelessly walks right past the cam. His older partner spooks from the camera, and is photographed just before an exit that bypasses the set up. I was so excited to find the pictures were taken in the daytime and in good focus. It took about a month of patterning and plotting to get these pictures. There is one more wolf in the bunch that I don't have a picture of... This is keeping me from getting my motorcycle 'chores' done. lol

They are very elusive. In over a 100 trips to Fort Ware I saw a lot of tracks-some so fresh the snow was rolling down in the tracks as I passed. Only once saw one and this was by his choice, big black male in the summer just watched me till I got close then sauntered into the bush. Broke down once and spent a cold night in the truck. Could hear them talking to each other all night.  sounds like angry foreign conversation. Eerie. Didn't go far to pee. Nice pictures Todd. CHEERS.

Wish there were some wolf tracks in my back yard - all I get is Mulies and a single, ever-optimistic coyote... the deer are an annoyance, and the coyote seems to lack credibility with them.
