Need help getting papers
« on: December 13, 2012, 10:58:59 AM »
I am new to this getting papers things and am looking for some help. I met a few folks at Dennis's garage but I can't keep track of real names and user names that well.

Bike no has papers at all.

I sent off the first step (request for previous owners info) and got the papers back saying I was rejected from getting the info. They even gave me back my $7 cheque. The rejection letter and phone call I made told me that the people who owned the house where it was left had to seize the bike then they could sell it to me. They have no interest in doing this and I have no real connection to them.

I am fairly sure that I just went about the whole process wrong in my writting of the letter. I mentioned
-name of the previous owner
-story of how it was left at a friends friends, went to friends then friends gave it to me
-my story of how I tried to look for previous owner
-my interest in getting the previous owners info so I could send a transfer form

I am just wondering if I am totally out of luck or if there is anything else I can do. The bike is now stored at Ben Wech's place and my thinking is that if it is there long enough then he can try and seize it as it sits on his property. Any thoughts would help.

Happy to pay for someones coffee and a doughnut if you want to meet and give me some pointers.

Paul (Kawmeister) has had alot of experience with this.   I have a standing offer to all members that when it comes time to swear your Statutory Declaration, I will take your oath for free.

I have only obtained lost registration once before (Ebay Bobber) and am currently  in the same process you have described.  I have sent the first Statutory Declaration to ICBC with a $7 cheque and am awaiting a response.

I was surprised to read about ICBC refusing to give you the details.  I am not sure what is up with that.  I'd like to see what you sent them.  From the points you have described, the only thing I can think of is that your letter did not establish a prima facie right of ownership.

A couple of years ago we had a guest speaker at one of our meetings from Bartons.  She was a font of information and most of us go to Bartons when there is an issue.  I am embarrassed to admit that I have forgotten her name.  She no longer does the ICBC stuff, but the person she trained is just as good.

I have read many Statutory Declarations.  Basically you tell the story with as much detail as you can muster as to how you came to "own" the bike.  Paul has a theory that including the magic phrase "I have no knowledge of this motorcycle ever having been registered in British Columbia before" is a key factor.  I'm not sure why but he swears by it.

Your question comes up frequently.  I frequently see motorcycles for sale without papers.  If my current endeavor pans out easy enough, I may add this to list of special skills.

I would be happy to show you my letter and the rejection letter I received. It would probably be worth bringing them to a gathering so other can learn from my mistakes an I can get some collective wisdom. I will admit the collective is often dumber than the individual though.

One of the most annoying hurdles of old bike addiction is the number of bikes that have been lost in the system but still exist and need to be brought back to life. Got lucky both times I've gone through this, Getting some previous info sure helps but being a part of the PrinceGeorgeVintageMotorcycleClub helped even more. Thanks a bunch to Dennis I now have a papered bike that I can turn into anything I want. Still need a 12" shorty muffler for it.

  Later, Bob

My beloved GS 1000 Zara took almost 7 months to get papers. Got them in late September so rode every day into Dec. Good thing it was a dry year. Kaw-Meister who we affectionately call "know it all Paul"  Svisdahl has it down to 2 weeks. Definitely worth the trip behind the 7-11 on 17th. He is a wealth of information. Luck and CHEERS.

I've had success getting two bikes re-registered. One took a couple of weeks with the coperation of the previous owner, found through information provided by the ICBC search. The other took a couple of days when the previous owner could not be contacted.
I'm ready to do another now...

2 weeks! that is unreal. I may call on your expertise.
I just got that cm 400 that was on Kijiji and sure enough there is not a scrap of paper for it.

Big thanks to Dennis and Paul for letting me look over their paper work from projects past and underway. Gave me a lot more confidence in the process.
