I was wondering what the idea on these tech nights is. Do I invite others to come and labor on my machine (sounds like a sweet deal to me!) or am I inviting others to bring their bikes over to my garage for an evening?

Actually the term tech night originated a couple of years ago to cover our meetings at steamers for a brew of some sort.  I sounded better than "honey I am going to Steamers for a drink".  It has evolved to include the fore mentioned but also visits to other members garages to work on bikes, criticize the former or just have gab session.  It is quite informal and sometimes we do actually work on bikes and learn something.

Tech night is a bit of a misnomer.  "Garage Night" is probably more like it.  Basically we hang at someone garage and drink some beers and talk bikes.   A few years back, the Club collectively rebuilt an R5 Yamaha that we eventually raffled off.  Most of those were tech nights.  Most have had a theme: at Shep's and the first one at Parker's we  went there to change fork seals.  That usually doesn't take a dozen buddies, but with Parker's it almost did.  I have hosted a couple with various themes.  One was to just see if we could start some old ratted out bikes.  We actually fired up an abandoned CB350.  I also hosted one "first startup" where we started my drag bike and my 1958 BSA... neither had ever run since built or acquired.

I just got back from a weekend of hunting and checked in and learned about Fast 1's loss.   Shitty is an understatement.

Tech nights can be whatever somebody wants to host.  Educational is best, but really, we'd drink beer in anyone's garage.
