The KZ750 Saga continues.... and how to make Parker Cry
« on: September 16, 2012, 10:51:36 PM »
So Parker messaged today, and said come on out after work, we can remove your engine and stuff... okay sounds good I say.

First.. stop for beer, mandatory when fixing bikes... then parker needed to fix the stand, so he welded the piece back on. (yah i broke it, revenge i guess lol) So we start removing parts, let me tell you how fun disconnecting that shaft was .. wow good times. Okay engine out, lets take it apart and get to the rod bearings and crank.....

We didn't quite get the engine split apart... altho we did have a few beers, sang some classic tunes listening to hair nation... and laughing about other things... anyway... the pics will speak for themselves.... the last couple are what made Parker Cry. At least I cleaned the last pic, so you all will know what it SHOULD look like lol....

Bummahs... so what is that clogging the pick-up screen? It looks like cardboard or seaweed or ?  Is that what shut the oiling system down, thereby seizing the crank?  Or is this detritus metal,  the result of the crank hammering out the bearings?

I classed it as "gunk" however it was very plasticy (is that word?) So yeah.. thats what was shutting the system down, also would seem to be why my engine got really hot, really fast !!!

Tonight Ill split the case, and see how far i can get.. and also see if I can find any other buried treasures...

I have to give Parker credit here... he keeps me level and says.. we have a plan jer.. dont worry. I keep hearing Hans in my right here... "hows the fire insurance on it?"

That's fugly.  That looks like what happens when oil and water emulsify, turns into a nice sludge that has little lubricating properties and good pluging properties.
I live with fear and danger everyday, but sometimes I leave her at home and go motorcycling.

However, those arent the words that Parker used... i wish I had a camera rolling when we found that... his reaction was priceless.

Pass a magnet over the gunk and see if there is metal in it.  I once pulled a pile of metal shavings from my CB350 engine only to discover that it was aluminum.  That narrowed down my analysis to finding the only likely source for aluminum shavings; the cam chain running loose enlarged the passages in the barrel.

If its non metalic, I'd sure be interested in learning what caused that.  What a fugly mess.

Appears you have a good candidate for a boat anchor. Starving the engine for oil like that there is sure to be more damage that has not yet made itself apparent. Could spend a lot of time and money rebuilding  only to have something else go. Just my two cents worth. Cheers.

I'm still amazed at that wad of goo; particularly what it is, how it happened, and what we ALL can learn about avoiding something like that in the future.   Fast 1, have you ever seen anything like that before?  Other than a pack rat climbing into the engine to make a nest, dying and rotting (saw that in a gas tank once) I am still in awe at what would cause that complete goo'd up blockage.   Hans speculated an oil and water coagulation.

Jeremy: your new found urge to chase this to the ground is what this hobby is all about. You will learn so much, and in sharing it (especially with pictures) with the rest of us, we will learn along with you.  While the end game is a functional motorcycle, enjoy the journey getting there.  Believe me, when you have this engine purring like a kitten on your lap, you will experience the sweetest pride and sense of accomplishment that only comes from perseverance.

Good news.   I am hoping that you or Parker take the mystery sludge to the college for an analysis.

In the mid-eighties I was the maintenance man at Camp Trapping.  One of my jobs was to maintain an ancient crawler tractor for plowing the parking lot and road into camp.  We knew the machine was on its last legs.  Someone suggested that we take an engine oil sample to to college.   The report received was to not run it again.   They said we would need its last minutes of life to load it on a flat deck to take it to the steel recyclers.  Thats what we did.

so... tonight was a good night for the "frankenwhateverparkeriscallingit" spoke with Paul this afternoon, ended up going over to his house with parker.... and we found a crank. We found it in an engine that Paul had tucked in the corner... so.. we spent a couple hours tearing it down and pulling the crank...so now i have a crank, and rods, bearings to put in the bike, along with an oil pump...

Tomorrow I will spend the day at parkers and we will get it cleaned up and all ready to start building again....

big thanks to Paul for the parts !!! and to Parker for hangin in there with me... and twylla for letting him too !!!!
