Roy's "Bikes in Fields"
« on: May 23, 2012, 05:49:06 PM »
Roy's enterprise came up in a conversation I was having with Rusty Bucket today.  I gave Roy a call.  He does not have much new (old) stuff since, but still has the same old junk he has been collecting for years.  He says he thinks he has a couple of XS650 engines which I am sort of interested in.

I was wondering if some other members wanted to take a trip up to his place together.  Its a bit hard to find if you have never been there before, and with his big barking dog, its better to go with people who run slower than you do.

I was thinking about taking some time on Saturday.  Let me know if you are interested and I will give him the heads up.  He never knows when he will be home unless you call in advance.

If you think you might want to call him yourself and test his memory on what he has, he can be reached to (250) 640-2685.

If nothing else, Roy's is entertaining.

Peace & Grease, Dennis.

I am always interested in going to Roy's place;  and I do find it hard to locate.  Somehow I always seem to end up standing there in the first serious snowfall of the winter - it'll be novel to be there in the spring. Dog was nowhere to be seen last time I was there with Guy picking up his Ascot, which was about -25, if I recall.  I try not to have a shopping list, preferring to let inspiration strike me as I bask in the glow of the accumulated inventory.  Pat seemed interested in seeing if Roy might have a Suzuki electronic ignition plate, and Jeff is scouting for a miniscule tank for his tracker;  we're motorcycle guys - we need motorcycle parts.

For what its worth, Roy asked if I wanted to buy his entire inventory.  Sounds like the novelty of running a bike breaker's has lost its shine.   Hmm ... I am moving to Pineview and will have 5 acres of my own to spread stuff around ....not sure if my marriage could take five acres of bikes ... even if I left them in the field like Roy does.

.. and New Life Cycle is for sale as well;  I guess Dave and Roy have already pulled their millions from the used motorcycle parts business, and are now looking for a soft spot on the canvas...   Go-go gadjet barrister;  buy both.

I'll be coming through P.G. on Saturday but not sure what time, would like to browse Roy's treasures with anyone going if the time works. If you post the time and leave a contact number I'd let you know if it works for me. I can't send emails from where I am for some reason but I seem to be able to post. As was said earlier we all like and need motorcycle stuff so it's all a great adventure. Been there before but don't remember how to get there but I do have a GPS so should be able to meet there if I know the time and address. Already have a bunch of parts with me that originated in Winfield but still have a bit of space for the right parts. If the timing doesn't work I'll be thinking about all the good deals you'll get without my competition.

   Later, Bob

I called Roy.  He will be home tomorrow, Saturday, May 26th at 11:00

2930 Muermann Road which is north on Hart hwy.  First road after the City of Prince George is the start of the winding path.  I googled the address with Google Maps and it popped right up.

If anyone wants to follow me or catch a ride. I plan to leave my house at 10:30

Kurt says he might  come by Roy's later, at noon or so.  I will try and make it out there around 11:00 and I will check in with Jeff, who meant to go earlier in the week, but didn't, I think.

Like locusts driven mad with the scent of rust, the faithful gather at Roy's to once again attempt to slake the unquenchable thirst...

Just wish Roys was closer and all his parts were under a roof and the ones you really want could be found. Enjoyed my time there and never spent a dime, Roy couldn't find the parts I wanted. Wife didn't mind hanging out with kids in a candy store either. Maybe it's a good thing my space is limited.

I bought two Can-Am mufflers;  which I would totally regret if they hadn't been only $10.  Dennis gave me the muffler off his IT400 and that is the best of the ones on the floor of my shop right now,  but I am thinking the stock unit might be the best for our purposes.  On the bright side, I was able to indulge my taste for rusty tanks once again with another mid '70's  Honda 500 unit.

I scored an XS650 engine for $100.  I offered Roy $50, he said he usually sells complete engines for $300 but would take $150.  After 20 minutes or so, I said "Roy, you gotta sell me this engine for 100 bucks."  Maybe it was body language, the fact that I'm a repeat offender (I mean customer), that I brought a bunch of other looky loos (I mean potential customers) or that lump in my jeans (cash ... ) was talking Chinese dinner for Roy tonight.  Either way, I think I was the only one with a confirmed bargain by the end of the day.

For what its worth, Roy does have alot of stuff, but not generally worth the price he wants. I know these guys need a decent return on their investment but some things are silly.  He has a mountain of rims which are rapidly deteriorating ("Bikes in Fields") and wants $50 a piece.   Russel was a ready and cash heavy buyer, but Roy wouldn't budge.  At  20 bucks a wheel Roy would be eating Chinese take out for months.  At $50 they remain a "Field of Dreams."

Apparently Roy accosted Fritz and tried to bill him the $10 for the Can-Am mufflers that I bought.  I gave Roy a $50 bill for a (rusty - that's how I knew it was meant for me) $40 tank and the mufflers, which I could see I wasn't going to use about 10 seconds after I got them to the shop.  I did think Dennis did well on the 650 engine, though.  Roy's has lots of parts that I want  but they are almost never what I need, and almost always things I shouldn't have taking up space, waiting for an alternate reality to establish itself, in which the parts most would currently deposit in the recycling bin become suddenly useful.  I think Sr X displayed good sense in refusing to adapt his desires to fit the available wares;  a problem I have never come to grips with.
