My 1992 K100 has a low RPM stutter
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:52:02 PM »
Any previous K100 riders there with some suggestions as to why the 92 K100 I just took delivery of has a rough time (pun intended) firing on all 4 below 3,000 RPM?

It overheats something fierce when this happens and eventually sprays the coolant all over the right side. The plugs are clean and gapped, the electrics are in good shape and I suspect maybe the fuel has some water in it so I'm drianing it all out and starting again from a cleaner source.

Does anyone remember any particular issue that used to cause this?  I see from the variouos sites and other service bulletins the K100 was notorious for this sort of problem.

I suppose I could just ride it at 3,500 all day but the max (safe) speed here is about 30kmh and I'm there at 2,500 in first so it makes things a little difficult.

Thanks in advance!

Steve

I'm no mechanic but after doing some searching on the K bike forums the consensus seems to point towards dirty/plugged injectors that doesnt allow clean fuel flow at lo rpm.

Well I guess we should never underestimate the ability of a little bit of water to mess up an entire fuel system!  I drained all the fuel from the tank, filters and fuel rail and then had a look at the final product in a clear bottle and sure enough, there was about 2 oz of water in it.
Hunted down the place that sells fine Australian fuel (Versus the stuff they buy from Indonesia) and began a system of filling a large, see through gas can then allowing it to settle for a minute then pouring the top into the bike and leaving a litre or so behind and hopefully any water or sludge with it.

The bike runs like it should now and the overheating issue is gone as well!  ;D ;D

Of course the max speed here is about 30kmph because of road conditions so I'm in second gear all the time but it feels nice to be running right!

Had the K100 out today for a while.  There's some nice scenery up in the hills.

Runs nice when there's clean fuel!
