Incentive
« on: June 09, 2015, 10:25:29 PM »
My uncle Randy passed away Sunday morning, my custom motorcycle mentor. Used to stay at his place a lot as a kid, once he got me to wear his geman W.W.2 helmet while riding my first chopped bicycle to help it look more weathered. Got a lot of strange looks. Not looking for sympathy. He lived a hard full life and was ready. What his passing did do was to remind me any of us could be next. I have been crossing things off my to-do list like crazy during the day and after the last child goes to bed at 8 I have been working on the red rocket till dusk. Progress like crazy. just might make it for the show and shine. CHEERS.

Sorry about your loss.  Happy about your inspiration.

Get the red rocket done.  PG summers are beautiful but short.  A blast on a bike always makes me relish the moment.

Carpe Diem, Dennis

Six days in and six to go. True to my word I have spent every night in the shed for at least an hour. Thanks to Rusty buckets donation of a front tire I am up to the status of being able to roll it around. Carbs are almost done, stator is installed, new oil cooler is mounted. Blasted my valve cover at Lindy's today, pipe is prepped for paint---can't remember how my oil cooler lines were routed, need to dig through pictures. Tomorrow is payday so a major shopping spree is in order. CHEERS.

Great to hear you are using the same voluntary time restraint I'm working with.  Definitely a motivator.

12 days in and tonight's the first one I took off. Not quite there but so much closer than I have been in in 5 years. Looks good but doesn't run yet. Can't find the new bowl gasket I bought and the diagram for my replacement reg./ rectifier (originally 2 pieces) is long gone dusty. Need Russ or Ted's
help on this one. New deadline is my birthday...Bringing the glider again tomorrow. CHEERS.

I'm willing to help if you still need it, Wayne, but I won't be available June 27th to July 3rd.  Give me a call if you would like to do something with it this week yet.

As per our conversation at the Show 'n Shine, I'm pretty good with electrics also.

I searched the web for a diagram to confirm what I believe: that your charging system is a fixed magnet alternator type, where all the current going the wrong direction (half of the AC making it DC), and all DC Voltage over 14.5 volts gets dumped as heat through the nice aluminum fins on your new regulator/rectifier.  The closest I got was a 1980 GS1000GT.  All other years of other GS Suzukis confirmed the same.

The one thing Suzuki did that was fuggy was they did not have the three wires coming from the stator the same colour.  The three wires on other bikes were often the same colour, often yellow or white.  No big problem to figure out with a tester or just visually looking.  The 1980 GS1000 wiring diagram shows them as G/W W/Br and Y (green with white tracer, white with brown tracer, and yellow).

If your new reg/rec is a universal one for these types of alternators, it probably has three wires the same colour, often all are yellow or white.  These three and three go together in any order.

There should be a ground which is universally black, and often has the tell tale eye hole attachment for grounding to the frame.  The red is colloquially know as the "hot" and it usually goes to your main "on/off" switch, such that in the "off" position its not connecting with the battery.

The GS series has a notorious fault of burning out the charging system.  A very lengthy, but very good read starts at this link called the "Stator Papers."  By the end of it you'll be an expert on all the if/thens and whys.

I know you like to use existing wiring harnesses as much as possible.  I really enjoy making or modifying wiring harness and would love to try one with some new wire connecting techniques I recently learned from Ted.  Given all the help you've given me, I offer this in return.... 'cept this time you buy the beer.

When Dennis came to wire my stator/ rectifier last nite I turned on my key and nothing. Thought the battery was dead but checked it tonite and there is juice in the battery. Somewhere between installing the battery (had power)and the stator (no power) something happened. Pinched wire on the primary cover maybe? moved on to fuel. Put gas in my tank today And discovered the petcock wasn't sealing to the tank. Drip drip--maybe it's loose? tightening it made it worse. Hooked up the line to the carbs and found what I suspected to be true-- the o-rings on the fuel t fitting have shrunk and they're leaking too. 1 step forward 2 steps back. some nights f'n suck.

I've got a zillion O-rings in one of those kits I'll drop off.  I need to come by anyway because walked away with your Philips head screw driver and screw for the starter relay.  I stuck them in my tool box so they wouldn't get lost.

Decided to see if rapid-fix lived up to their claims and glued the t fitting. worked (at least for now!) Then discovered the fuel enrichener shaft was stuck. Freed it up. then found out one of the plungers was stuck. Freed that too. Installed the carbs and then started looking at the wiring, wiggling as I went. Checked the fuses and turned on the key--power!! Lifted the lever and pushed the button and true to form she turned 3 times and fired for the first time in 5 years. A minute later she coughed sputtered and died. Thought it ran out of gas but the power went out, nothing again. Tomorrow night will be spent chasing the gremlin but hearing her run again has me stoked. Much better than last night. CHEERS.

Query: when the bike went VVVRRROOOOM did you happen to check the charging system?  14.5 volts at the battery?

Since this was the only part I helped with, I'm curious if I wired it correctly.

Peace & Grease, Denns

Goal accomplished. Forgot how well we fit together. While Allwyyn's chopper is nice to ride it's not near as much fun. Finished her last night and plated this morning. Shakedown cruise revealed an oil leak on the valve cover. Missed one screw on the final torque. fixed. One carb a bit weepy but a couple full throttle runs and some bumps cured that. Helped a couple of my Harley friends with their bikes in the late afternoon and we all rode down to H.D. o' P.G. to meet Huey when he got off work. Rode out to his place on Tabor lake swapped stories and had a couple brews, managed to touch on 200 on the way home. Tire is just fine Russ. Right side fork seal leaks after sitting so long but outside of that it is running well, Huey also gave me a set of shocks off of a Sportster low so happy birthday to me! CHEERS.
