Fork seal driver
« on: February 19, 2014, 07:07:26 PM »
Hi everyone out there in lala land.  Does anyone have a fork seal driver for a 36mm fork that I might borrow?

Thanks

Hans

Usually we use a socket of the right dimensions with an extension.  It seems to work.

Yeah, this needs to go over the length of the small fork tube though.

Hans - Donovan is right it does work for us using a socket if we don't have the rite seal driver. We haven't had any issues doing it this way. We pack the seal with a grease that blends with motor oil or fork oil etc. It helps to hold the spring in when taping it in I have found. Now experts might have another way, but this works for us. I chamfer the objects edge a little so its not sharp or it can peel the outer of the seal like a foreskin and might leak. the experts might say different. I hope this helps.

on these forks the inner tube has to be in place first as there are inner and outer bushings that live beneath the seal, and the damper road bolts to the bottom of the fork.  Then the fork seal has to be driven home on top of all that.  When I did the FZ1 I was able to use a piece of plastic 2 inch pipe over the inner tube, that worked great as the ID was just about perfect. It's too large for this bike though.

I'll check my stash.  I had  a pcv pipe with a slot cut its entire length and hose clamps to correctly "adjust" the inside diameter.  I just don't remember if this was my tool, or one I borrowed.
