Electrical issues on my WLA
« on: November 21, 2012, 11:28:21 AM »
I have a charging problem with my '42  WLA and I'd like to get it sorted before the new year.  Is there anyone in the club that has experience with generators and can take this on? I'd pay regular rates.

Thanks

Steve

Well. I think Rusty got a crash course in Harley generators on Lee Anne's Sportster this summer. If not Mark at Xcaliber cycle should be able to help. I would have to re-learn things I have spent years trying to forget. CHEERS.

Is the light OUT on the instrument panel...?
One may  want to check the Wiring on the Cut-Out Relay.....

Generator Removal and Brush Replacement, - Bench test is fairly basic,
......needs to be lifted up and out if it is still a 6 Volt system because of the oil slinger...then need to check shims when putting back in

Any good electrical repair shop in town that has worked on Old car generators etc. could probably do a good overhaul of the unit if brushes were not the issue ( or Xcaliber maybe as mentioned earlier )

Unless of course you have found someone already to fix it..... ;D

Is there a picture of the bike on the site somewhere?

Kawmeister's guys there on Third Ave - Northern Automotive Electrical? - though they have Paul's complete confidence, aren't much help with gear-driven generators as the system to drive the generator has to be jury-rigged separately each time.  They are also not able to, for reasons that have never been clear to me,  test generator and regulator separately - which means to me you may as well stay home and test them yourself.
On the bright side, Ted knows a good deal of this stuff from having worked in his family's garage at the time this technology was still more-or- less current;  though he undertstands all the intricacies of newfangled electronics as well, he hasn't forgotten the old stuff.  As far as hourly wage guys go Xcaliber would seem a logical choice, being Harley specialists.  Fritz, though he is more of a generalist, and hard to hire for work like this, is certainly familiar with the charging system of a particular Panhead, no doubt there.  We need to grab a generator off an old truck and one of those '60's mechanical regulators for testing purposes... it was a real problem solver for me to borrow the Bosch regulator off one of Kaziff's Volvos to finally prove Leanne's Sportster had 2 dud regulators IN A ROW.

2 DuD Regs in a row.....sounds like the same thing I have going on with a couple coils..... :o

Another interesting note is how some  3 Brush- 6 Volt Generators in the 40's used the 3rd brush to meter current and didn't use a Regulator...- that simplifies things....

Apparently it wasn't necessary or  Mandatory to run daylight Headlights and signals, Horns ...Foglights, Stereos...electric hand warmers...night vision goggles,...Coffe cup holderwarmers...GPS warning sytems,...IPODS...phone chargers etc. back in the day ? ;D

Oh - see?  There you go - you're the man for obsolete Harley riddles - prepare yourself to accept delivery of am enigmatic Ironhead;  it has a problem I can't seem to solve - it leaks oil, if you can believe that.

I suppose I should have added some detail before I hit enter the first time.

The beast was first assembled a few years ago with what I thought was a new reg and a working generator but soon realized it wasn't charging.  Tried taking it to several shops in town and had the deer in the headlights look (personal experience on the (now wrecked)84 honda shadow qualifies me to use this expression  :P :P)

I have a possible sale for the bike and would like to get this issue cleaned up.  I'm back in PG on Dec 20 but I can make the garage/storage accessible prior to this if there's a chance it'll get done earlier. I'm OK with taking the bike to any garage/workshop to get this done.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Steve

Saw your bike when you brought it to Pine center. I like it. Most 45's are olive drab or good from far but far from good. Did you build/ have it built for you or did it come like that? At seventeen I used to live with an ex stripper turned welder whose ex built her a beautiful Honda 750 chopper.  She picked me up from school on it once- only time I can remember liking the backseat. My friends (and most of the males outside) were soo... jealous-but I digress. Her bike had a chrome 12 inch over narrow springer. She wanted it to have a front fender close to the tire. They came up with the idea of attaching the fender struts to the rocker plates at the bottom. This way the fender rotates around the tire instead of into it. Simple but brilliant yet I have only seen it on a couple other bikes. As for the girl-well, turns out she wanted a babysitter for her son more than a boyfriend. Oh well, it was still worth it. no regrets. CHEERS.

Well -  the old girl is on her way to Brisbane, Australia and I wanted to say a  "thanks to all" who participated in the pick-up of the bike from my home and investigation of the charging issue. Especially to Russell for the use of his warm shop and tools while packing the bike up.

This is what I envisioned when the club was suggested a number of years ago. Expertise being offered to other like minded individuals for the sole purpose of extending the life cycle of favourite machinery.

I would be pleased to see this continue and renew my offer to assist any way I can.
