Tuesday May 24th Ride Night
« on: May 25, 2016, 12:05:00 AM »
I knew we'd get a good turn out given the weather was so beautiful.  One of the things I love most about this Club is the eclectic collection of bikes likely to show up.

Guy's Beemer

Paul's GS Beemer

Ian's DR650 Suzuki

Russel's caf? Sportster

Wayne's GS Suzuki

Kurt's BSA

Ted's Triumph Trophy

My XS650 Bobber

Parker's KZ650 Kawasaki

Rob's ginormous Suzuki (sorry Rob, I can't remember the cc's, but its more than everyone else)

Clayton's Goldwing

Neil's 1100 Suzuki

James Pakenham's R60 BMW caf? racer

Brad's true survivor Goldwing

We had a good ride via Old Summit Lake Road to the Summit Lake loop at Summit Lake and back to the Alpine Pub.  Along the way we met a Harley rider (Rick?) who joined us for the balance of the ride and beers at the Alpine.  Hans was with us for the last half of the ride (hence no photos above).  Hans also parked outside of the group and missed this photo.

It's 50km according to the road signs from PG to Summit Lake (100 Km round trip ... city limits I am assuming).  I have a 145km range with a full (peanut) tank on the highway.  I didn't fill up as much as usual and that was this afternoon before a few blaps around town, and we took the twisty Old Summit Lake Road. I checked my tank on reaching the Alpine and there was just a skiff of fuel left.  Coming down the hill on Foothills from the Hart, I ran out of gas.  The petcocks are at the rear of the tank.  I sputtered across Foothills bridge and died on the first exit.  I rolled my bike backwards into the ditch to maximize the fuel flow, and got enough to get up the hill to Foothills and 1st Ave where it died again.  This wasn't too far from my home, but its been a decade since I pushed a bike further than around my shop.  Since I'm "Still Alive At 55" I decided I could push it home.  I wasn't too far when some guys stopped and asked if I needed fuel.  I graciously accepted just a couple glugs from their Jerry can, fired it up and rode home.

Peace & Petroleum, Dennis

I actually checked into this once and the 50 k would be to the hospital. You are leaving----fire protection signs are 10 k from area limits. I started just under a full tank and hit reserve where you backed into the ditch, Drag racing gear down, 4 carbs and Paul's "spirited" pace are the reason I suspect. my tank is a little over twice the size of yours. Put in 10 bucks at Bon-voyage tonight and it was a little lower than what I started with yesterday. Bet 5 is a squeeze in yours, glad you didn't have to push all the way home! CHEERS and mileage.

Dennis - I had a similar experience when I was first driving the Sportster. The tank caps aren't vented so when it heats up the expansion of gasses caused the fuel to spit out the overflow.  I was on my way up the Hart when it sputtered and died, drier than a dead dingo's donger.  A fellow in a pick-up with a nice wide glide in the back stopped as I was investigating the causes and got back in his truck, went to his house, grabbed a gas can, filled it up and brought it back for me (all with-in about 20 minutes) there-by saving me from having to push the Ironhead to the next fuel station (how embarrassing) or calling one of the family (might have been a 2 hr wait).

I'll remember to 'pay it forward' for sure.
Why be normal?
