Snoot boots
« on: February 13, 2015, 10:48:16 PM »
Bought a pair today at Cash Canada in near mint condition for 30 bucks out the door. Actually went looking for a computer monitor. Made by Double H in the U.S. they retail at $225.00 plus shipping and tax. When I was a kid I read a lot of comics, many of them featuring ads for Dingo boots endorsed by Joe Namath many featuring "snoot boots". Don't know 'nothing about no football but those were some bad ass boots. At 14 my cousin gifted me a well used pair that were well worn and too big but they had wide straps with brass rings and were cool. Wore them out. At 15 my MOM bought me a brand new pair of brown ones. I wore them out. In my early 20's I bought new black ones and had them rebuilt till' there was nothing left. haven't had a pair since until today. The Frye boot company "invented" the harness boot in 1938. Based on a civil war boot with a flat snout shaped toe, they added straps and rings to produce a new design. H.H. Brown of the Richland shoe co. made a cheaper copy called a snoot boot. His company is now called double H so my boots were made by one of the original manufacturers! Amazing what you can learn on Google in one evening. I know Dennis has a pair and my gut tells me Russ has a set salted away--anyone else? Bulldog? Found my black Tana shoe polish and am gonna' buff those those babies right now!!! P.S. anybody want a worn pair of size 8 Harley Davidson engineer boots? CHEERS

Curiously, I've never actually owned Snoot Boots.  I love tough looking boots, and I have had at least three pairs of Engineer's Boots, and even more of the round steel toed cowboy boots.  I always thought the squared toe on the Snoot Boot was a little too bad ass for me.

And the thick soled Daytons.  I've never owned a pair of those, but always thought they were the toughest looking.

Peace & Grease, Dennis.

I also never had these - I was in Vancouver as a teenager, and can attest that the Dayton was very much the thing to have if you were the hard-rockin' tough-walkin' AC/DC type - a group I was not in.  I also had a peculiar aversion to any footwear that had ankle-level straps, rings, hooks, laces or anything else that would cause me to get ensnared by my footpegs or shifter/brake lever/pass.pegs and so-on, after an ugly incident where a looped lace lassoed a footpeg and deposited me on the ground.  This was a repeat performance, after having done the same thing earlier with a pair of great-big-flappy-leg jeans, when kids had those, though that was here in Prince George.  Just clumsy, I guess - and wary because of it.
Now there was a girl in Van I really fancied who had snoot-boots... but then she was perfectly consistent to the above description, too, and, as such, pretty much beyond my reach...

I started out with cowboy boots that had to be folded over to fit under the current fashion in jeans, back in '68. Then went the snoot boot way for a pair, but if I remember right cut the straps off. Then got a pair of Black Beauties at Army & Navy. Promptly went out and had them double soled, gained 1/2" of clearance. Also had a couple pairs of Daytons lace-up cowboy boots as well. Now it's pretty much anything that keeps my feet and ankles covered. Still don't feel comfortable wearing runners yet.  By the way, a new pair of Dayton Black Beauties are running 500$.  I bought mine for 100$.

Oh yes, don't forget about adding the steel heel savers. Not great on ice, but cool in the halls of PGSSS.  1970 really wasn't that long ago, right?

Snoot boots.  I had never heard of them.  Sounded like something I would rather not discuss.  I did look it  up and first came up with a picture of a camera cover.  That did not make much sense since when do you where cameras on your feet even covered.  Either way not a good way of taking pictures of riding a bike.  They also had a picture of a knitted something or else to cover one's nose in cold weather.  I thing that should have been called a snot boot instead of a snoot boot.  So I finally came to the correct picture of the boot in question.  Nice looking but to tell you the truth the term snoot boot generates an image of fuzzy bunny slippers.  I cannot seem to get that image out of my little mind.  I think the term that Russ had of an Engineers boot was more proper to me.  But looking at them they reminded me of something an older sister's boyfriend would wear when picking her up.  Along with the leather jacket, chains, slicked back hair and a comb that opens like a switch blade knife.  Said boyfriend would be hell on wheels to us little guys.  If the gods of luck were really against us aforementioned  boyfriend would become our brother in law from hell.   Sometimes life is just not fair I guess.  Any ways enjoy your snoot boots (must be a better name for them) and hope they help to keep the rubber on the road.

always thought that 'snoot boots' were the end all of boots when i was young(mid 70's). 2 yrs ago in PG I bought a pair of Boulet's that have the snooty look. Black leather, high top, ankle strap w/steel rings at ankle, mid heal, square toe, total cool. You too can have the snoot cool boots, just head down to the feed store that sells Boulet's.
