I'll eat humble pie if I'm wrong.
« on: June 23, 2015, 03:04:47 PM »
During my daily ritual of avoiding work in the afternoon by scrolling through Kijiji, I see the following ad from Summit Power Sports for the Cleveland Cycle Works "Heist."  It says the engine has "no overhead cams."

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-street-cruisers-choppers/prince-george/2015-cleveland-cycle-works-heist-at-summit-power-tools/1082302652

It is cut and pasted from Cleveland's Website

http://www.clevelandcyclewerks.com/new-page/

I'll eat humble pie if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that engine is a single overhead cam model.  I felt sure enough to email Cleveland and tell them.  If they turn out to have a push rod OHV engine, I'll buy one (the engine that is).

Peace & Petty Particulars, Dennis

I'm not actually sure how to eat Humble Pie, but I'm sure confessing to the brethren is a start.  I got this email back,

Hello Dennis, our 250cc in the USA and Canada currently has a 2 valve pushrod motor.

We have 2 land speed records with this motor, it is a solid little performer.

Thanks for the support, and thanks for looking out for us, cheers!

So then I did some more research.  Here is a diagram for an article about them.

I think DanielG had one of those.  He pretty much destroys it and the dealer in one of his blogs.....

I've read that, and heard his oral version.  Sounds like a complete disaster for him, and definitely turned me off.  I remain optimistic that the company's success (its grown a lot since I first started following them) is a sign that they are improving quality control.

When they started out they were using a Lifan 250cc.  I don't recall if their first models were using an overhead cam version and/or if this current push rod OHV is something they have had made since.  It would be a lot more appealing to North American buyers if they could get a 500cc push rod single made along the same lines.

Engines are still Honda based CG style engines. OHV with pushrods.

Summit went further to make me grovel.  Steve took the rocker box off and sent me the photo.

I will take a little solace with his comment, "It was very tough for me to find a break down on the motor so I just took the valve cover off."
