General Discussion / Rain activity for Tuesday July 14 evening
« on: July 14, 2020, 03:57:41 PM »
As of 16:55 hrs It's raining in the Hart, and it's raining in Miworth.  So Rick suggested we do a shop nite at the Bottle Depot to begin re-assembling the little Yamaha.  Say shortly after 7:00.

I'll drive my cage to A&W and see if any riders show up, let them know about the bottle depot rain date.  Thereafter I'm heading over to the Bottle Depot on 1st.

General Discussion / Garage project begins
« on: July 09, 2020, 08:34:42 PM »
As all know, I've been blustering about my coming garage project for a while now.  Today I broke ground. Final dimensions will be 16' x 30'.  It's gonna be awesome.

There will be a meeting this coming tuesday July 7 at the usual time, and usual place.  (in case you have forgotten, follow the July 7 link on the calendar for the time and place!)

We will be required to follow social distancing rules as follows:
1.   If you feel ill, or have a fever or are experiencing any flu-like symptoms then do not come.  Stay home.
2.   Everyone must sign the guest register by the entrance with your name (written legibly) and a contact telephone number.  This is needed for contact tracing in case anyone comes down with Covid
3.   The wait-staff cannot deliver plates to the tables.  Instead, an unoccupied table near the galley is designated where they set down your plate and call your number.  You then pick up your plate and cutlery.
4.   Tables arranged side-by-side may have chairs at only every second table.
5.   They will permit us to arrange tables in a circle, but we must put them back the way we found them when we are done.

We need a couple of volunteers to show up a little early (say at 6:15-ish) to help arrange tables.

The Cruisin' Classics are holding a parade in lieu of the more usual Fathers Day show 'n shine.
-Staging will be at the CN Centre on Ospika Boulevard. Enter the parking lot via the 18th Avenue entrance between 1215 and 1245, no earlier.
-Bring a cash donation for the Salvation ARmy food bank
-The first cars will depart CN Centre 1 PM sharp via Keller Rd to 18th Ave, Left on 18th to Foothills.

For more details, check out the Cruising Classics parade web page--link is below
https://www.cruisinclassics.ca/2020-covid-cruise-for-a-cause

Bikes are welcome to join the parade.  I suggest that PGVMC members that want to join the parade all congregate in one area on the North side of the parking lot.  This way we'll all be riding in one lot.

General Discussion / Sometimes I get lucky
« on: June 08, 2020, 09:31:40 PM »
This weekend I found another water buffalo--a 1977B.  This one wasn't planned; I just got lucky.

Several years ago when I bought the 1974L parts bike the guy mentioned seeing another water buffalo in his neighborhood and described the trailer where it 'lived'.  I managed to find the trailer and left my Prince George Vintage Motorcycle club calling card in the door jamb.  On the back of the card I wrote a note to call me if they ever wanted to sell the GT750.  I looked up the guy a couple of times but when he told me in no uncertain terms that he wasn't interested in selling I kinda forgot about it.

Well, last week the guy called me out of the blue.  He had decided to that he was too elderly to ride and still had my card stuck on his bulletin board.  (he's 83 and uses a prosthetic leg to get around).  He said bike was mine if I wanted it. So this last friday I paid the guy his money and rode the bike home.

The guy was the original owner, having bought the bike brand new from Tom Martell Suzuki in 1977.  The bike is a little bit crusty but has only 8100km on the clock. The gearcase vent is spewing oil, three exhaust baffles are missing, the steering head bearings are shot, the front fork seals are leaking and the carbs are overflowing.

But, the engine runs, brakes work as do the all the lights and LED gear indicator.  The bike has never been crashed.  The engine has never been out of the frame and has never been apart.  The chrome is for the most part in very good condition.

Of course the ugly fairing is de-installed already as are the bulbous saddle bags and top box. I'll have to source some turn signals and a set of exhaust baffles (or try to extract the ones from the 'L' parts bike which has been crashed on both sides). I'll also have to find the reason for the gearcase oil sputum which probably means an engine strip and if I go to that effort I'll replace all the seals and o-rings. The steering head bearings should be a cake walk now that I've acquired the appropriate tools.

It's all good--in winters I have nothing but time. Looking forward to it.

General Discussion / Should we accept another 'project' bike?
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:38:46 PM »
Kaziff got a lead on a 1986 Honda VFR750.  The current owner was given the bike by his brother and has tried a few things, but he's not been successful.  He would like to see the bike go to someone who can fix it up and re-activate it.

The bike has 60k-ish kilometers on the clock.  Judging from the picture it looks complete but probably needs some fettling and faffing (from the image I can see that the throttle twistgrip seems absent).  The carbs for sure need to come out for a cleaning and there will be more.  Judging from comments on various forums, VFR's aren't the easiest to work on.

Recall that we already have 2 projects on the go and should not start on a third until the existing 2 are settled.  The question for the group is:
-is it reasonable to take on another project bike--assuming that we can find storage for the time being?
-Do we have anyone in the club who knows a thing or two about VFR's?
-Could this person cast a hairy eye on this bike and give us an assessment? (the carbs especially) don't have a great reputation for being easy to work on.

Please provide wisdom and comments

Events / Modified General Membership meeting Tuesday June 2
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:24:52 PM »
I spoke with Margaret Goings (Legion President) today and the Legion won't be ready for us on June 2--which is our Normal general membership meeting day.  They also don't expect to be ready the following Tuesday so I deferred to July 7 by which time they should have worked out their protocols and distancing rules.

For this Tuesday (June 2) we'll again stand in the A&W Parking lot for a Meeting-like Chat.   'modified' general membership meeting in the A&W parking lot (complete with 2 meters distance).  Meet starting 7:00.
Agenda:
     -minutes from May 5
     -Treasurer report
     -Tuesday nite rides
     -Project Bike
     -Summer ride-outs?
-Go for a ride (hopefully the weather cooperates)

General Discussion / Legion struggling right now.
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:50:29 PM »
There was a column in yesterdays Citizen about the Prince George Legion.  They're closed right now by order of the Provincial Health officer so no income.  With no income they are trying to raise $20k to cover their overhead for the next 3 months.

I have 2 questions for our group:

     1) Is there any interest in our club to 'front' the annual donation to the Legion that we typically make at the end of the year?.  $500? and
     2) Is any interest among fellows in our Club to make personal donations to the Legion. I'm willing to coordinate the effort by collecting peoples
cheques.  Wether or not anyone donates is strictly a personal choice and I would not divulge the name of anyone who does or does not donate.  (the
Legion has started a gofundme page but I personally don't use these things.  GoFundMe extract far more commissions than they add value.)
I did a quick search of the CRA registered charities and the local Legion branch 43 did not show up.  So that means there probably won't be a tax receipt.
But, I'll follow up with Margaret and let the group know.

Comments?
