Unfortunately the fatal accident near Vanderhoof last nite  claimed the life of my good friend and fellow member STU REES......will post details as they come available. I am speechless with blurry vision.

In delivering a pair of motorcycles to Vanderhoof today I drove through the scene twice;  on the way back to Prince I waited for a hole in the Friday traffic and looked the area over. In circumstances like this, one sometimes has thoughts like, if only he had been six inches farther left or a second earlier, but I have to say, I had no thoughts of that type when looking at this scene.  It was very apparent there had been a collision, and the logs strewn on the north side of the highway, b-train flatdeck on the south, and the large area and the damage to the road surface itself gave ample testament to the terrible nature of the accident. It felt arbitrary and absolute. There was a bouquet of flowers placed close by the highway.

Most everyone will have heard the saying that to have a friend you have to be a friend.  I am reflecting on Wayne and Stu as I contemplate this, as the balance between them was a rare one, unconditional.  The last time Stu and I spoke of Wayne, Stu was entirely unequivocal, he said, "He's my dearest friend; I love that guy" showing Stu as both having a friend and being one.
I know we will all miss Stu:  how could you feel anything else?

So sad to hear, I've known Stu for a long time. He will be missed by many people, heard there had been an accident out that way. Always sad to hear it's someone you know.

For what it's worth the R.C.M.P. said he died instantly. Ironic that after so many drives/rides with one eye closed he should be stone cold sober, 0% in the wrong. his three children and parents along with many friends are still trying to absorb this. His motorcycle will be going to his eldest son Dylan, as well as his tools. Could you call me Wayne? 613-5670. Thank you Russ. You touched my heart.

Sorry to hear about Stu, He will be missed by us all I am sure..  Rode out to Vanderhoof today and saw the accident scene but was unaware of what had happened there.  My condolences to the family.  Is there anything the club could do, flowers, sympathy card etc.?

In my short time with the club I  talked to Stu a few times and he was always so pleasant, a happy person.
My condolences to the family.
I would like it if the club sent flowers and a card to his family.

This is the story from the R.C.M.P---the car in front of Stu's was driven by an elderly woman from Ft. St James. She suffered a heart attack causing her to veer suddenly into the oncoming truck, the car exploded on impact and disabled the steering on the logging truck. The truck driver hammered the brakes and tried vainly to turn as his truck crossed into the oncoming lane. Stu also tried veering out of the trucks path. Alas, fate had them meet almost head on even if he  had he missed the truck he couldn't have avoided the load of logs. maybe better this way. A following b-train took the ditch to avoid hitting Stu from behind. A car arrived shortly . The person had medical training and went to help. Checked for vital signs. there were none.Stu's car then caught on fire. You can guess the rest. His body will be moved from here to Vanderhoof then a funeral date will be set. He will be missed by many.

As a more recent member, I only spoke to Stu briefly a couple of times. They were pleasant encounters and I judged him a worthy club member - and then some. I would certainly agree with some appropriate recognition from the club: flowers, card etc. and whatever else we can reasonably do.

My condolences to all who will miss him. He is a loss to his family, his community and to the club.

Ted

Wayne, thanks for keeping us informed regarding this terrible event. I ran into Stu three weeks before he died and had a great visit, even in the short time we chatted he spoke highly of your friendship. My heart goes out to his family and to all those close to him, this is a terrible loss and will take a long time to heal from. It makes me feel good to see the love and support that the club has when something bad happens. Take care all and hope to see some of you again soon. Always, Bob.

Wayne B, are you able to approach the family on this? or can you call me with a contact name for me to cal? Kaziff 250-640-0364

STU worked at plateau sawmill from high school. They will pay for catering to this event. there will be a bar at STU'S  funeral and they want to do a round "on STU" . our dollars will contribute to  this. I think it is fitting considering the nature of our club. We are the fun ones after all. I will be emceeing' as well as delivering the eulogy. Anyone wanting to say anything but not the ability to speak in public can e-mail me and I will read it for you. Already going to use Russ's post. Winger1@live.ca.Sorry Wayne. I know Friday is your worst day.Didn't get to pick the date. Marion and Donald ( Stu's parents) already have a house that looks like a rain forest--so I think this is the best thing for us to do. I miss you my friend. ADIOS.

I can have my mini van swept out if anyone wants to car pool.  I can take up to 6 passengers squeezed or 4 in comfort.  I will leave from my office at 1:30.

My office is 251 George Street, right across the street from the courthouse.  Parking downtown kind of sucks though.  If there are enough interested we could meet at a better parking place.  Let me know if you want a lift.

I just heard from Bulldog and he now intends to take a ride with me as he will be able to ride to my place with Jeff (it's complicated).
That leaves me with Guy, Jack, Jeff and Wayne. Maybe we'll stop by Canadian Tire on our way out of town at 1:30 just to touch bases with your group, Dennis.
Will see you then.

Thanks very much to all that attended. I thought the club turnout was excellent, a strong effort. Also believe we gave our friend a right proper sendoff. Cheers mate, see you in the next life. Special thanks to Russ for all his extra help and patience. Also thanks from the family for our participation and  donation. Going to overindulge now.CHEERS!

Sometimes one undertakes a simple journey without thought to perils that might intervene while we move from one place to another, as, say, from one's home to work, work to home, or even possibly from the beginning of a eulogy for a friend to the part where one might falter and be unable to continue for a moment... fate conspires against us,  the unexpected announces itself, things don't go the way we planned.  Sometimes these are the most minor of inconveniences, so trivial they are hard to even recall an hour later - and sometimes they are the stuff which still brings tears to our eyes after half a lifetime.  These interventions, the simple expression of mathematical probabilities, chance and mischance, are nevertheless beyond our prediction, a broken lace,  a wandering dog,  someone wants to turn left... the minutia of days.
The effects of these mischances, most of no consequence... and yet some have a significance, an impact, that lays the cornerstone of a lasting regret.
But mischance and regret, these are not what Stu was about; what happened to him that afternoon says nothing about him - except he was there.  Sadly, by coincidence, Stu was there.
He always was there, though - happily, and not by chance - for his family, for his friends, and us, his clubmates, and this does say something about him:  as Wayne said, a genuinely positive force in the world, a truly good guy - missed  immediately - and in the days to come.

Very nice Russ, was proud to be part of the club yesterday and obviously Stu must have spoke highly of "his" club as we were warmly recieved for the sendoff toast.
I,ve been thinking we should put forward a small donation to Wayne to cover part of the powder coating of the monument?

Was in Vanderhoof working last friday but didn't finish till 7 PM so missed the service. Took the time to have a couple in remembrance of Stu at the Grand Trunk, so happens thats the last place I talked to him too. Spoke to the driver of the B train who happens to be my cousin so got a first hand account and saw some of his photos. He will be missed but didn't suffer, thanks for all the effort by the club to show it's support.

I would like to thank everyone who came out for Stu's memorial service or. Thanks to Wayne, who MC-ed the service and (I think) brought out Stu's bike.
Stu DID speak well of the PGVMC and encouraged me to get out and join. I was impressed with the club turn out and I'm sure Stu would have been, as well.
Motorcycles were Stu's passion, his life, even. I've known Stu since 1982, and I have never known him to have have a car that was anything more than transportation. He lived for the time spent on two wheels.

To Stu; Ride free, my friend! Twist that throttle, tuck in and don't look back... we are all right. Your next adventure begins beyond the turn and over the hill. Cheers, Mate!

I have not been here much and am sorry to hear of this loss of life.  I do not keep up with local news at times and did not know of this accident.  I met a few of you at the show & shine, & went on two rides.  If one of you could post a picture of Stu I would then know if I had the pleasure of meeting him, even if it was just in passing.

If you met Stu he would have been distinctive by his accent- he was Welsh so he talked funny like        Terry. Always wore a welders cap. they fold well in your jacket pocket.
