I was checking the rates for basic coverage and comparing them to the collector plate and found the multi-bike plate offers a better rate for 2 or more bikes. Keep in mind there are provincial regions that affect the cost of the insurance but here's what I have in the Okanagan:
Total Annual Premium - $118
Annual Licence - $35
Fee New Plate Fee - $75
A total of $228 for up to 12 (I think) bikes
So far I have just 3 bikes on the multi-plate but I decided to modify the 78 XLCH Sportster to comply with the collector policy because I'm too cheap to let savings like this go by. The current annual policy for the HD is $640. ICBC turned down my last request for the collector status because I had a dual tank on it. So - I took the dual tank off, removed the petcock (a $65 item on eBay) and sold it for $175. Then I bought what I thought was the correct tank for the bike from a fellow in Florida for $105 USD and $45 USD shipping.
Turns out he put the wrong tank in the box coming to me and I received a brand new peanut tank for a 90 - 92 model. The cost of postage back and forth would have been almost as much as the difference in the costs so he said "Keep it". Then I had to make a pair of brackets to mount the rear of the tank with. $5 for a piece of plate and 1.5 hrs cutting and drilling it.
After all is said and done, the costs to comply with the 'keep it factory original' have been less than the savings for one year on regular insurance policy with a couple of hundred to spare.
Next I photographed the bike and tried to get the photos printed - no luck. So I called ICBC North Van and the new guys looking after the collector unit are:Guy Black and Michael Anyon and they have developed a system of receiving applications by email. If you take the 4 photos of the bike plus a photo of the VIN and complete the collector application then print, sign and re-scan it and send them all to collector@ICBC.com
to Michael's attention.
Email or message me if you want to discuss the process a bit more.
Keep in mind, the higher the quality of photo you send, the greater the opportunity to zoom in on it and possibly spot flaws or errors. For example - if they look closely at mine they will see the decal on the tank spells out the usual Harley - Davidson stuff but also suggests this to be a "Five Speed" Sporty.
So, we'll see if the gods of insurance are going to smile down on me or will I have to dig into the cost savings and do some more modification?
Stay tuned and stay home (unless you're on your bike).

I thought that was too easy.
I went to apply the front brakes on the XLCH and found them to be mush. A check at the slave cylinders confirmed the rubbers had let fluid past and would have to be replaced. so maybe now I'm not in such a hurry for the collector plate decision as I now have to wait for the hydraulic repair kit to come.
Maybe it's time to bring out the Atlas and se if I can figure out the clutch and hard starting issues. The Sporty parts will be about a week or more.
