So, a couple years ago after my Honda XL600R failed on me in the bush and I had to get a rescue I was pretty sure it was the carbs. I pulled them out twice and went through them. It would run great for a couple minutes and then die out. My thoughts varied from stuck choke, to bad float valve, to failing electrics. Anyway, by that point the season had ended and I put her away. Last year, I completely ignored her. This weekend I've been cleaning out my garage and while it was out in the driveway I decided to try and kick her over. To my surprise, it fired on the first kick. Third kick it was up and running. Ran it up and down the road, let it sit and idle in the drive, seemed to hold an idle pretty good. It would pop and threaten to stall. Shut to down, came back a half hour later, it was pretty hard to start, but it did.
New theory.... the previous bad running after me dicking with the carbs was just a piece of crap hanging up the float valves. Letting it sit for a couple years either flushed or dissolved it. I think the hard starting and previous popping and dying in the bush is because there is a tight valve. Will check it soon... about as good a theory as any of the other bad ones I've had with this monster.
