Ah, yup; I have an SP370 (one year prior to SP400 - very similar, but not identical, engine) and a GN400 (identical engine except for cv carb)  The engine is good, but the 6V electrical service is less than ideal.  The oiling system has no oil filter, rather using an intake screen over the pickup - when I last looked at my GN screen (for the first time in a decade) last fall,  the screen had started to disintegrate, and there is no doubt some small bits of it have gone through the system, and scarred the cam journals some.  I don't know why the brass screen came apart, or whether it is a freak or commonplace occurance, but it is a concern.  The SP70 (actually older, and my example much abused) screen was fine, so it's not a guaranteed event.
Though most often turned into choppers, I have seen GN/SP 400 ice racers.  The steering head is something like 31 degrees, so the chassis needs some work for a tracker. It is down on power (natch) compared to the Vernon-standard XT/TT 500 Yamaha, but it is a bit lighter.
