On a previous thread I opined how there is no way these gas powered bikes are legal. There is lots of mythology about being under 50cc etc, but I have always maintained there is no such law. A motor assisted bicycle must be electric. The proliferation of both the bikes and the mythology has been because of lack of enforcement. I have ridden mine past the cops on several occasions with no consequences.
However, I think the tide has changed. While coming down 1st Avenue today, I saw a cop with one pulled over. I guess the party is over. Bummer, 'cause I love whizzing around on mine.

I saw an older man on an electric scooter at Overwaitea who had one with the pedals removed and mentioned he should put them back on to avoid being illegal and he said someone took the ticket to court and won so now you can get away with it?? Then he forgot to put the stand down and it crashed over....politely picked it up for him, smiled and walked away. CHEERS.

Coming across Jeff in traffic on his (now stolen and missing) powered bike was a bit alarming because to my primary senses he was riding a bicycle - at something like 40 mph, which twisted my reality for a quarter-second or so, while I adjusted myself to the idea of extremely fast-moving bicycles. The danger he faced was all-too real...
Meanwhile, coming back from Mt Vernon, Paul and I saw a guy in the Thompson Canyon on the highway between two towns - on an electric mobility scooter. If seeing Jeff slicing traffic made me worry - seeing this guy grinding down the inside edge of the lane at 6mph on the twisty highway was downright terrifying.
All a matter of perspective, I suppose, where the balance-point between risk and reward is, as well as between personal freedom and the obligations of good public order. It takes a fairly aggressive or a very careful person to ride a regular bicycle lin heavy traffic safely - especially in traffic that only sees bicycles for a short period every year - what it takes to ride one safely at almost double the expected speed is beyond me. I guess the answer that occurs most naturally to that question, when I thnk about it, would be 10-20 more mph, and lights - which brings us to the motorcycle.

Happened to mention this to Jeff today and his reaction is that if you see a cop with one of these motorized bikes pulled over, it is more likely the person - rather than the conveyance, or the way it is being operated - that occasioned the traffic stop. Jeff, who after all does know many of the guys with these bikes, thinks it is a cop's suppression/harassment tactic for those who would already be on the 'person of interest' list.
It would be a bit different - possibly awkward, even - to find you'd pulled Dennis over, if you had intended to target the local dealer.

OK, I am now firmly in the camp against these thing, at least the ones ridden by young dickheads who blow stops signs and almost centerpunch me. If I see that kid again.......

This could be why I have no cop issues when I ride mine. I ride like an old lady, and my bike looks like Pee-Wee Herman's.

Just a side point. Saw an OLD GEEZER just tearing down north Nechako yesterday. Looked to be doing about 50k. And yes he did have his bicycle helmet on...for what it would be worth.

Took a minute to catch that one. :( But sorry to say it wasn't Dennis. Was much bigger and looked much older. Maybe should have said "crazy old coot" :)
