Title: Tuesday Feb 26 Tech night at Parker's
Post by: madmac74 on February 21, 2013, 01:45:31 AM
Ok , so ,were almost ready to road test the burgundy , gold and black Shaftie.....  I was planning on a Carb tuning evening , I have a set of Sync gauges that work pretty good also.  Once we get the floats set and agree on an air screw setting we should be good to go!!  So come one ! , come all !.  I'll put a fire in the stove, and get some adult beverages, even thought we're all just a bunch of big kids.

1 and 3/4 turns out on the airscrews. Floats should be level. Good base. Speaking of base, the carb that the cable goes to is the base when you are syncing them. CHEERS.

As a side project, I may bring along the forks from my FZ1.  Need new seals.

On second thought, I think I'm going to order the bushings also, may as well do it right.  They likely won't make it for Tuesday.  Plus it looks like I have to create a couple 'special' tools.

Same night as my daughter's birthday .... hmmm.... beers and bikes or cake and ice-cream.  Sorry guys, looks like I'll be missing this one.

well dennis, if you really want to do some wrenching... i could bring the carbs over !! lol... i have them here, went to parkers today and adjust the float height...wouldnt start... plugs were dry, so it wasnt getting fuel... but thats cause we moved the needles the other day... so I gotta rip em apart again and adjust the needles back.

Im home all weekend, doing nothing, so I may plug a small heater in my shed and ripe em apart.

Might seem like a stupid question but is there fuel in the bowls? Did you check to make sure you don't have your coil wires backwards?? Between carbs a & b did you change anything else?  Check your timing plate to make sure you tightened the screws?  Anything else you can think of that might have vibrated loose? Almost always turns out to be something stupid. See " I'm a jack-ass". A wise man once told me never trust anyone's work but your's and even then double check. Just some ideas for you. CHEERS.

coils are fine, we had it running on the old carbs again the other day... its just fine tuning these ones. It would start on choke.. and stay at 4grand... but if we shut off choke, it would die.. and would not respond to throttle. So we think the floats are too high now... i was looking at a manual, and it said 22mm.. but these came from a gpz... which is spec at 18.6

we also moved the needle spacers.. which i have to put back as well. And yes, there is fuel in the bowls.

Hi Olaf,
The following is from a post by Parker, AKA MadMac74, giving instruction for a previous tech night.

"...Madmac's place.  14245 Miworth Road, first driveway on the right, just past  Wilkins road. Look for the two lights on pillars and a wooden gate!"

Easy enough to find.  Be glad to see you turn out.

MadMACs instructions are fairly easy, but heres how I would explain it... head to miworth, as soon as you round the sharp left corner after the barn with the roof that has been destroyed look for the pillars ! or... second driveway on right. And done worry about Saxon and Mica... they are harmless, unless your Jeff

on third thought, I may bring the forks if the bushing show up.  Got them off the bike tonight.  One seal completely let go it looks like and puked fork oil down onto my new brake pads.  Special tools built, my seal driver is a work of art.  We'll tie into them if it looks like we have gotten Jij's KZ beat into submission.  Else, another night.

and the purple and gold thing is off Parker's stand.  Funny of the night was trying to put the exhaust system on with 2 sets of gaskets in the way.  Who says we learn from our previous mistakes......

No fork rebuild tonight, had a reminder about when calling Yamaha parts counter to deal with Harley and not Brandon.  Asked for fork bushings, got wheel bushings....  Oh well, not quite riding weather.

Yes, yes it is off the stand and running correctly. Funny the new petcock and mirrors showed up today, so that may fixed the leaky gas problem from last night. Anyway... here is a video... and yes Guy mocked me all night, so i mocked him on video.. also proves now he has touched the throttle on a kawa!!!

Thanks to all who helped out last night, i went to sleep last night knowing that the bike was running again, and the club members helped.

Parker... not enough thanks can be given to you for the help/learning/teaching/putting etc...

Thanks for all who attended.  We managed to get the Keihin 34 mm Carbs to work right after tightening up the intake holders on the head.  After that the 750 fired right up and throttle response is now nice and crisp!! So , we decided to have a go at installing the factory exhaust,( a favorite pastime here, after the Magna), and much to my delight, it when on with only minor annoyances.  Thanks to all who helped, and those who helped drink Brava, LOL
