Title: FRIDAY NIGHT TEST AND TUNE
Post by: fast1 on August 08, 2012, 12:10:47 AM
Be there or be square. Dennis has his bike ready to tear up the track. Be there before 6 if you want to run. Any time after to watch. Friday night if your not familiar with the track is "run what ya brung". A chance to see what your machine can do.  Not really racing, just a timeslip and bragging rights. We haven't done this as a club  for a couple years now. Wonder if Hans' new Yamaha is faster than Roseanne? Will the chopper break in to the 12s? Can Dennis stay on his little rocket? These and many other questions to be answered at the track. Can't wait. Cheers.

Well it seems like they do not have this Friday on that list....but it would be unusual for them not to run on a non long weekend (the way it was in the past)....I called them to make sure and the 17th is their next race night.....so I guess that will be when you all show up there?  I kind of don't like running my one and only bike hard anymore...it still has the original clutch in it, etc..I know, excuses, excuses....but someone has to take pictures right?  Hopefully it will not be rained out as our great weather starts slipping away.  If you have never made a pass check out what I wrote up under 'CMDRA drags' on this site...some info on staging, etc.

I attached my last timeslip, this is what a healthy Maxim X will do at that track.

Bummer.  I also called.  They ARE NOT open this Friday.  Northland is having their company golf tournment this weekend.  The general rule is every Friday that is not a long weekend, but this weekend is different.

According to their schedule it should be. On their website they are calling it "The Full Blown weekend" If you click on their link you even get to see a video ad for it.

By the way, if memory serves me correctly, it's 30$ to run in Friday nights.

I finished the drag bike last night.  Its still dry though ... I will add oil to the tranny and mix up some fresh gas/oil mixture.

Fast One: What is the name of that two stroke oil you recommended?  Purple something?

This Friday will be interesting because there will probably be lots of people arriving who plan to race on the weekend.

I plan to be there around 5:30 so I can set up my camper and awning so I can hang around and soak up the racing ambiance.

I hope to see some members there.

Peace & Grease, Dennis

Think it was only 20 last time I went.. not that it matters. Blue marble is the magic oil. Still need your main jet size! Cheers.

Fast 1 , It used to be 20$ but that was about 2/3 years ago when you last raced on a Friday, wasn't it?  Rosanne ( rest her dear old soul ) was still running then. ....Hans...... did you bury her yet???? :o I was told that last year was 25$.  30$ is a bit steep though when you may only get 4 passes in the whole night, as was the case a few weeks ago.

Four passes for 30 bucks does seem a bit steep, but its got to be better than the pass I took down Tabor tonight risking a big fat fine.

My bike missed and farted a bit so I shut it down.

2 more days......2more passes. ;D

After all, the fun in riding is the all about the risk. Otherwise we could sit at home and watch tv or read a book.

Friday night passes are limited by the number of entries and the number of break downs.

In the past when all was well you could make as many laps as you wanted, some nights 20 passes were easily a possibility.  It is true they may be taxed a bit with more than usual people showing up.  They tend to not ever start at 6pm.  So maybe when in tech inspection ask if they are going to start on time...if not ask why and suggest they get with it (as advertised)....the light will be almost gone by 8:30pm now.  Several things could slow or stop the action, so I suggest you not dawdle...get as many runs in early that you can....if all goes well you should be able to get quite a few runs in if you want.  Look forward to seeing you guys out there....I will spend some time at track level with my camera, shadows can cause photo difficulties, but will see how it goes.

My manual says that the main jet is a 340.  I hope that makes sense.

Needs some fine tuning but a respectable first time at the track. got gradually faster and did not break anything. Chopper turned a dismal 13.4, her best in the past a 13.1. Gotta get to work on the red rocket..... Fun and a good time had by all. sitting in line with full leather almost made me pass out-so hot! Thank god Dennis brought beer. $22.00 for four runs-$5.550 per. Well worth it. Cheers.

After a few reflective beers in the garage with my wife, I am still grinning from ear to ear.  My bike ran shitty.  I was the brunt of the announcer's jokes, but I have pretty thick skin and don't mind being made fun of, especially when I deserve it.

My bike starved for fuel after the 1/8 mile so I am speculating that its my hardware store petcock.  I have another I will try.  Fast 1 got me  some bigger jets (he upped it from 340 to 360), and of course there is timing and porting and all kinds of stuff to make a two stroke go faster.   I didn't get hurt, and I didn't break anything on my bike.  I had a greasy burger.  I got to spend a Friday night hanging with my buddies and my wife.  I'd call that a successful first night of racing.

Peace & grease, Dennis.

It was a fun night, Wil was grinning from ear to ear most of the night.  Loud fast cars and bikes ('cept Dennis....) and a bit of a playground to boot.  He crashed hard on the drive home.

Dennis, maybe lose the fuel filter and make sure your tank vents well also.  When it cleaned out, it seemed to pick up speed not too bad.

Glad things didn't start going south for you, I remember the all bike drags of many years ago when even the big money drag bikes had more bad runs than good ones. I've always been a spectator rather than a participant but hanging out in the pits I notice a lot of trial and error type of tuning. Hoping to make it to the Houston drags after work today if I can get finished early enough. Good day for a ride if nothing else.

  Later, Bob

Was a nice evening.  I loaded some pictures to photobucket.  One is out of focus and I usually would elete it, but it is the only shot I have of Fast1 so have to go with it.....My friend's chevelle had fuel delivery problems as well, we gotta figure out that Qjet we put on it.....

I enjoyed the Friday night drags.  I have not been to one for several years and it nice to know someone who is racing.  I will have to do it again.  Also liked the pictures of Dennis and Wayne racing and just hanging around.

Excellent wheel-up shot of Dennis bringing the bike off the pad;  guys with street cars go to considerable trouble trying to get this result.  Watching Dennis, the thought occured I have a lot of extra GS1100 stuff around, wheels, frame, bodywork, engine (minus charging sysytem) pipes, carbs, and Toby's old wheelie bars... but the motor I have on the shelf was already described as 'tired', and would probably only push the bike to about 110-112 mph, maybe just fast enough to do an 11, but more markedly be the fat, lazy, air-cooled dinosaur the young 'uns with their modern Gixxer 600's and 750's kick sand on, let alone guys with 'Busa's and ZX14's.
What would a cop think about a streetbike sporting 6' wheelie-bars (maybe pointed straight up for the trip to the track) idling at the light in front of him?

Claudio actually checked into this. Tail light has to be at the back of the bike.  If you put a tail/brake light at the back of the wheelie bars and plug it in to the existing one your legal. Cheers.

You could wire a 4 prong trailer plug to the bike, and use a clip on light at the back.

I  replaced the petcock and fuel filter.   The fuel filter I took out was in backwards.   I am not sure if that mattered or not.   This one will handle a V6 engine and I made sure the arrow was pointing towards the carb (duh).

I ran it hard in the garage afterwards.  It won't hit the screaming RPMs that I need.   More research necessary.

Peace & Grease, Dennis

Petcock looks lots better - don't know if the old filter being reversed would have an effect on it's flow; not in theory, I don't think, but in actuality, who knows?  I suppose if the filter screen was dirty, which you wouldn't see because the dirt was on the inside of the cartridge, then the flow would definitely suffer...  Lori was certainly getting some weird behaviour from the fuel in the lines.  Agree the new filter should flow plenty.
Take the bike out to your other house, or some other out of the way place, and see that it will pull through a couple of gears from low to high rpm.

I am planning on another go around on Friday, September 7th.   I just checked the webpage and nothing says cancelled.

My nephews are stoked to bring their rat bikes out because they can do burn outs without getting a ticket (apparently this is frowned upon behavior where they come from).   Other than the petcock and fuel filter changes, I have done nothing since my last fiasco.  I would like a decent set of passes in its stock configuration before a winter of tuning.

I won't have the camper for base camp (awning, lawn chairs, beers, rock 'n roll) because Lauri is taking it out to the bush to claim our turf before opening day.   Gawd I love that woman.  She sets up camp while I go motorcycle racing.

Peace & Grease, Dennis.

Hopefully there won't be any clouds around. The week b-4 the long wkend it looked like it might rain so they never showed up. Many disappointed racers.  >:(  Some from out of town as well.

They don't, but that was the wkend before. That is the second time that they haven't opened because it might rain. It would be nice if they posted a cancellation on their website.  I did hear that the owner hired someone to look after his cars and that person will be looking after the website as well. Things may improve.

"Hired to look after his cars"  Imagine that.  If I were rich I'd hire Fast 1 full time to keep all my bikes in fine fettle.

I only made one pass.  My kill switch tether pulled off half way down the track, but even before that it was apparent that my mid range was fugged.  I had raised the needle to its highest position to rich-en up up the mid range and it was obviously a mistake.   I did have a surge of high end power, but I was shifting too soon.  I promised myself that if the bike ran crappy, I was leaving early and I did.   I wish there was at least one more drag night, but I will have to wait until next season.   I think there is plenty I can do in the long cold winter which will be on us only too soon.

The highlight for me was that my nephews  came out and raced their rat bikes; an old Magna and a CBR.  The CBR was running 13s.  Its a p.o.s. stripped down rat bike, but he still cracked off 13s at over a 100 mph.  My nephews have hooked up with some other rat bike riders and its pretty cool to see them riding together.  They look the biz (real bikers, not decorated in the latest Willy G. fashions).  They were all hanging at my shop before we went out to the track, and I really enjoyed their company.  I feel like kind of a mentor, which at my age is about all I can expect.  Very cool to have young guys drooling on my iron, and twisting my ear about building bikes.

Bulldog, Kaziff and new member Daryl were there, and I finally met Ken a.k.a. FJ1200.   I was especially pleased to see the younguns hanging with the olduns in the bleachers.   The younguns  also showed up at PAGARA to view the potential flat track venue.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and no one ever set a land speed record their first day at Bonneville.  Its amazing the way us optimists rationalize failure.  I was told the announcer who mercilessly made fun of me last time, this time only said I was "determined."  I take my strokes where I can get 'em.

Peace & Grease, Dennis
